...you could always turn the balsa board over when it has been damaged or worn out after some time, and re-install the aluminum bars.
Or you may be able to take it to a cabinet maker and have it planed flat and smooth again. I once worked for a custom kitchen company that had sanders and planers the width of a large cabinet door.
