Default Wing Area On A Biplane

Question...
How do you figure out wing area on a biplane with staggered wings? Do you take the wing area from each wing and add the two together or do you measure from the trailing edge of the lower wing to the leading edge of the upper and mulitply that by the span?
Here's what I got..
Top wing... 16" chord by 48" span
Bottom wing...16" chord by 45" span
They are staggered so the top wing is 4 inches ahead of the lower.
How much wing are do I have???
Thanks
Tom
