Back in the '70s I owned a Merco .61 with the dual plug head. I am pretty sure that it was factory.
Also, there is an after-market head some helicopter guys use on the OS Hyper 50, that is a dual glow-plug setup. I believe it's called the 'viper head'. (No hyperbole in those names, eh?
