There should definitely not be a squeeze required to get the bell on. It should go on uninhibited and spin freely before putting the spur gear on. Are the shoes tight against the shaft or lifted off? I dont' think its necessary to go with the stock setup again, if you have a savage 3-shoe setup its just a matter of setting it up.
