What warbird am I describing?
First hint: It was flown by both opposing sides, in wartime, as well as serving in several neutral air forces.
Second hint: It was initially considered to be pretty much a failure; as its early models were clearly inferior to other designs produced by its host country. After use in combat, it was withdrawn as being unsatisfactory in performance. Only when redesigned, and assigned to a new role, did it prove successful.
Third hint: Both civilian and military versions were produced; and both versions were sold to, and produced by, other nations.
Fourth hint: Once the plane was redesigned, it was considered to be almost invulnerable.
Fifth hint: It served through two wars.
