What happens is when you have to big of a gap, first of all you're probably not on pipe at all, but mostly, the silicon tube pulsates and won't allow the engine to come on pipe at all. Secondly, the silicon tube will burn out eventually. when I was flying pattern, if you cut your header to short (not really something you can do with the weston header on that engine LOL!) and I had to move the pipe back, i would cut a section of header tube that was left over to put back in the silicon tube so that there wasn't a big space with just the tubing there.
