Have at it gentlemen. I'm going to buy whatever you convince me to buy. Don't be cheap I want the good stuff!

I have another post in the kit building forum about a Royal Corsair Kit and received some very good feedback. I want some more advice before I buy and this forum should have lots of Corsair experience online. I have been looking at Ziroli, Meister-Scale, and an old Royal Kit. Here's what I ultimately want:

1. A 1/5th scale Corsair around a 100" wingspan. A little more or a little less doesn’t matter.
2. A great flying aircraft.
3. A scale looking aircraft.
4. An excellent kit to build.

Top shelf all the way! The best blend of plans, materials, scale accuracy, and flight performance.

PS,
You can throw in an engine recommendation to if you want. I was thinking of radial engine.

Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the Century Jet Corsair. 1/5 Scale, 100" span, for a G-62 or bigger. Lot of scale detail and options. www.centuryjet.com
It's not cheap!!! But they have a lot of variations of kit combinations !

Cybertom,
I'm leaning towards a Ziroli myself. They are proven good flyers. I would consult Corsairjock before building to get some scale
assistance from him. I'd bet that guy could correct the imperfections on a nats ass if he could see it. He has one very sharp and very critical eye when it comes to Corsairs. Half the fun of the plane is building it and having the braging rights.

I had the CJM corsair. It is poor quality glass work. It had huge voids in the glass mating surfaces thru-out the plane, with flashing so thick and protruding so much that I could almost cut bread with it. I averaged about 1/8 inch of flashing thru-out the model, but some even more that that. The plane is god awful heavy, bare. It will be AT LEAST a 45 pound model when finished. The upper and lower glass did not meet at the wing leading edge on the wing panels, so I had to fill the entire leading edge with bondo to level out (more weight). The left wing panel did not line up with the center section, no matter what I did, more bondo=more weight. The center section did not mate to the fuse well. Both wing panels did not line up with the bottom of the center section on the bottom (while aligning the top side...left side never did mate at all). I had 1/8 to 3/16 gap on the bottom of the wing where the panels did not touch. There was a 3/16 step, as the center section sat lower than the wing panels, that I had to grind out and smooth and clean up with bondo (even more weight). That was all the further I got, but was enough to get me to sell (swap) the kit to a friend that was interested. For a kit that cost $1500+, and that for just the basic kit, it is a very poor return on the dollar. No quality control at all. I'd almost call it junk for what it costs.

Although only around 82" span, you may want to consider the Brian Taylor Corsair. You can get lazer cut parts through Bob Holman.

I don't have personal experience with the model, but understand that as far as scale goes, it is very good.

Process of elimination is one way to narrow the selection. You have eliminated CJM in my mind F4U5!

Iron Bay Corsair. Taking your #1 through 4 requirements in order:

1. Smaller than 100"(they say it's 86" , so your #1 requirement may rule this one out-----BUT:

2. VERY nice flying Corsair. It's personality is one which won't bore you, but very scale-like peformance is the forte of this one. Well balanced in flight, landing with the flaps down is a joy, be ready with the rudder on takeoff and apply power slowly(like any good warbird) ;-)

3. Very reasonable scale representation. The only deviations are, in my opinion, only discernible to the true Corsair "guru"---only exception to that would be the lack of main and tail wheel landing wheel doors(not hard to "fix" that problem, though). Actual outline of the airplane is very reasonaly acurate, and the molded-in detail on the molded fuselage and gull wing sections are very nice (panel lines, hatch outlines, etc). The fiberglass wingtips, although very nicely molded and of nice outline, really don't replicate the original shape very well(too thick, and tapered improperly), so this is an area that would require a little work to improve the scale appearance.

4. Fiberglass fuselage and gull wing portion are moldedin one piece----a huge plus. Very nice glasswork on these, also. The wing and tail are foam core, requiring sheeting--straightforward stuff. Only drawback is the lack of pre-cut wood parts. There are a few laser cut parts, but much of the balsa parts you will be cutting from a paper pattern---not my favorite part of this kit, but in a day or 2 you can cut all the parts. The glass parts' convenience and quality make this part much easier to take.

Plans and instructions are fine--in fact extremely good in most areas. LOTS of drawings with very good detail. Good photo-packed book.

Many engine options. I personally like the 3.2 ci gas size with a 20 x 12 prop or so. Folks have put 4.2 ci engines on these with good results, also. I'll be trying a D & B 3.7 twin in my SECOND one---first one flies great on a 3.2 Sachs-Dolmar.

I am sure glad I bought the Conachen Corsair (http://www.conachenaircraft.com) instead of the one from Century Jet. Although there is some minor filling required on the seams for both the fuse and center section everything fits together well. Both the CJM and Conachen Corsair's are based on Don Smith plans and at 100" it should prove to be an impressive model.

If anyone is interested in the Conachen model I can share more information with you.

Well, before I get into voicing my opinion, I would consider a couple of things first. How much building experience do you have?
How much flying experience do you have? How much flying experience with big warbirds do you have? If the answer to one or more of these is little to moderate, then I would seriously consider the Meister Scale Corsair. While it isn't dead on scale, it is still a very nice looking airplane, and it is probably the easiest of all mentioned to fly. I do have one...didn't build it, but I have one. I have built plenty of Meister stuff though to know how they build and the Corsair is not an exception. Again, while not dead scale the Meister can be tricked out to any degree that you like. Your ability and effort are the only real limiting factors. It also will be lighter than say the CJM, or the Conachen (from what I hear is no longer in business?). All the Meister stuff flies great if built straight. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
Best of luck,
Rob Bailey / Pickupsticks

Don't forget to include the Yellow Aircraft 1/5 scale 100" Corsair coming out soon. Beautiful Fiberglass with panel detailing. Extremely Nice retracts. That's the one i'm waiting for. Hmmm....Maybe WRAM or Toledo?

I produce kits for Ziroli's Corsair.

Great flyer. A tried and true design.

Bearzilla,
Please tell more. Were you able to see the plane and are any photos available. I went to the Yellow Aircraft site and could not find any info. Any idea about cost?
