Yesterday morning I was given my orders, "you are to report to Altus AFB, OK no later than 30 July 2005".... oh boy. I've spent the last nine years here in northern California and have have become just a little attached to it. There are TON's of things to do around the area (mid-way between San Francisco and Sacramento) and the R/C clubs... I've got 3 lest than a half hours drive from my house, and another 5 or so within an hour. Now I get to go to Altus OK, population 24k... well, it has to be done and I will make the best of it.
Something I'm wondering though, does anybody here fly in the Altus, Oklahoma area? I done a search and didn't really come up with too much. There were a couple guys looking to fly jets but they were mostly in other parts of the state. Besides, I haven't quite gotten into the jet thing.
So, help me out, do we have any prop flying R/Cers in Altus, OK on RCU?

Well, based on where you are going you are going to have plenty of space to fly However, that said, I know you probably wouldn't want to drive all the way to Tulsa, so I would point you in the direction of the Lawton, OK area. You might get a response from RCKEN on this thread since he flies in the Lawton area. Other than that your best source is the AMA website where they have a listing of clubs. And if you are ever in the Tulsa area, let me know and I can set you up as a guest at:

Well Stevo, there used to be a club near the base when I was station there 92-93. The only hobby store in Altus was run out of a muffler shop by a nice guy first name of Bill. Don't know if he's still there.
The club was small about twenty members or more when I was there. And they where still trying to get AMA sanctioned when I left.
The club had aquired permission to use part of an old land fill about five miles out of town. It was tough getting them together sometimes for a fun fly event. A lot of them had enough land of there own to fly off of.
Good Luck !!!

Steve our site is a 45 minute drive North of Altus. We have a member that lives in Altus now and have two former members from Blair(5 miles N of Altus). The member we have in Altus also has a site at his house to fly. I havn't seen it but I know he flys there. If you E-mail or PM me I will forward your info to him.

We would love to have you as a member. Our web site is outdated but I think still works. You can look at our field.

Hope to hear from you(get ready to fly in the wind) David

Thanks for all the info guys. I searched the AMA website already and saw the club in Lawton but was wondering if there was anything a little closer. Not that I wouldn't drive to Lawton to fly but... you know, I'm just looking right now.
Flying in wind isn't an issue, if you've ever been to this part of the bay area during the summer you know how windy it can get around here. I had my Cub (R.I.P.) up in 20mph winds (right down the runway) once, and another time in a 10mph crosswind (talk about FUN), so flying in the wind isn't an issue. I'm also into gliders so I'll be searching the hills around Lake Altus on the really windy days .

I was stationed at Luke from `94-`95, was in the 550th for a few months and then went to over to the 308th. I used to go up to a field off Bell Rd on the way out west side of Sun City... can't remember the name of it.... had a really nice paved runway if I remember right. I wasn't flying then, just used to go out and watch.

Steve, welcome to the middle of nowhere in the Great State of Oklahoma. Sorry I can't help you with clubs around Lawton, There was a resonable amount of activity down in Wichita Falls, and of course come up here to "the City" (Oklahoma City) we have seven clubs and about a dozen jet flyers.

come visit us at TORKs when you get the chance.

My first mishap investigation was a tanker dropping an engine 5 east of Altus way back in 1978.

Thanks for the invite Maj. Tomski, I'm sure I will take you up on that a few times a year.

Nick, any chance you know a Kelly Brady? He's a civilan (retired mil) working in the 308th, was my supervisor back when I was there. What do you do there in the 308th and what are you doing going to Altus?

You bet Nick. I should be out that way around July 20th or so, so if your still around maybe we can make a trip up to OKC to check out the flying sites there.
Electrical/Environmental huh... cool. I was a Load Toad (weapons loader) then retrained to C-5 Loadmaster.... funny enough also called "Load Toad".

You know what the deference is between a flight engineer and one of the early space Chimpanzee right? They got a treat when they pushed the right button

It's all fun and games folks... nothing to see here... keep moving along.

By the way, Nick, check out my photo page to see a little of what we fly around here.
