Built a Laser 200 .40 size from plans 15-20 years ago that is powered by a .70 Surpass. Well, over the years she's gotten a little heavier and doesn't look as good as she used to. I still love to fly her but I'm looking to replace her (sigh) with something a little more sleek, newer and better looking. (So I'm a dirty old man!)
I have some questions about the PA 120 to flyers that have been flying one in the last year.
1- Are the covering and trim well done?
2-Flight performance with a 120 four stroke?
3- Is the supplied fuel tank large enough?
4- Fit and finish good?
5- What prop are you using if you are using a 120 fs
6- Anyone have a red one? I would prefer it for visibility reasons.
7- Are you glad you added it to your hanger?
Any additional info appreciated. Thank you very much. Tom

Bill, thanks for all the info. I really have a thing for Laser 200's because my rather porky scratch built Laser flys so well and the fact I saw Leo Loudenslager fly the full scale Bud Light Laser 200 at several airshows. Leo and the Laser put on a great airshow!! Looks like I'll have to get me the PA Laser 120. Thanks again, Tom

For what it's worth, I've got a blue one with a G23 gasser in it. I had to chop off the nose a bit to get it to fit, but it was no problem. I sorta wish I would have gone with a fourtroke, because of the weight issues, but overall I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. I like the cleanliness of the gasser along with the fuel economy. The plane flies great, and if I were to prop it differently and redistribute the weight, I could probably fly 3D with it. The only complaint I've got with it is the covoring. My plane is around two years old and the covering has become very brittle. It has a few bubbles that I can't get out because of the texture. I would like to have it recovered, but since I'm no pro at covering, I'll have to find someone that knows what they're doing that won't charge me an arm and two legs. This is why I buy ARF's. Anyway, I definately reccommend this plane.

I just took mine up last week. Its got a TT120 2C turning a 16x6 @ 9,500 RPM. Still trying to get the tuning right ... initial thoughts are the plane flies very nice. Love mid winged planes. She comes in for landings really easy. Going out in a while to fly her again and see how well she can perform.

1- Are the covering and trim well done? Quality is not that great but it is well done
2-Flight performance with a 120 four stroke? It will run really well with any engine that can turn at least a 15x6 at 10,000 RPM
3- Is the supplied fuel tank large enough? I got no quarrel with it, no less than 8 mins flight. I think it can do 10 on my TT120 2C.
4- Fit and finish good? Yes but the wood could be a little better.
5- What prop are you using if you are using a 120 fs - NIL
6- Anyone have a red one? I would prefer it for visibility reasons. - Blue one is very clear
7- Are you glad you added it to your hanger? Of COURSE!!!

Mettler,

I was looking at this for my hanger. Did you get one, red or blue?

I was thinking of putting a 1.6FX on it. Not so much to overpower but I'm at altitude so I need a little more then normal with the thinner air.

What's your servo setup?

Mettler, I have had one for two years now & have always been very impressed with it. It lives in my trailer so it is always ready to go. Everything but the covering is top quality. Mine too is the blue one. They have changed the wing mounting method I think since I bought mine but pretty sure the plane still flies the same. It is very light and with a Saito 1.20 up front, flies like it is on rails. A lot of planes come & go at my house but the Pacific Laser 200 I'll never sell.

OK:

Thanks to all the positive replys I will be getting the Laser 200. I was hoping to do it with gas, but found a negitive post about doing so. It sounded like it would be a lot of hassel. I have been modeling RC since 1966 with a 17 year break until last year when I got back into it. Boy things have changed. I have been flying a ultra stik 40 for a year since being back in the hobby to get my air legs back. Do you think doing it with gas is a mistake? I don't plan on entering competition anymore, I am retired and $2.00 gal gas beats $15.00 gal gas, and gas seems to be a little diffferent for a change.

Also, Pacific Aeromodels has a new paint scheme, but not available. Anyone have any inside information as to how long the wait will be for the new scheme?

What you need to remember with the gas engines is that your going to be adding alot of weight to get the same power. That is, glow engines produce more power per cubic inch, than gas. Where the scales tip in the other direction is when you get to the 30% and up planes, and even then the 27% planes do welll on the larger glow engines. Gas engines are great, nice linear trottle response, etc. if you dont mind the extra weight in the smaller planes, but with todays 3D craze, weight is a big issue with the 60/90 aerobats. I hate cleaning up my glow planes. I hate how expensive the fuel is. But I wouldnt sacrafice having a lighter aerobat. I had a brison gasser on my 27% extra, then tried a 2.10 glow on it. It was WAY lighter with the glow, and thus flew much nicer. I'm not trying to steer you away from gas, but like everything, you have to use it in the right application, ie; is vibration going to be a problem, weight, etc. It wasnt too many years ago that many IMAC competitors would convert their gassers to glow, to take the power advantage, but it seems that fad died as the planes got bigger, and at that point, gas is the only way to go!

On my Laser, i'm using a saito 125 4banger, considerably lighter than the old 120 it replaced.
I'll post some side by side pics of the two, the size diference is almost shocking. Remember, 'light flies right!'
I flew my first laser 120 on a 91 fx, and it was amazing, untill it met an untimely demise because of a CA elevator hinge failure.
Nowadays, for me at least, on everything 60 and up I use pinned hinges on the elevators. I can bring one in if I lose a aileron or rudder, but your screwed when you lose your elevator, as i learned the hard way. It was a totally hopeless feeling.

Do you think I could do aerobatics ie knife edge stuff? I would like to play with 3D, but it is of no importance to me right now. I have an old OS90fs I could put on the plane, but don't know if this old engine would be okay. If I am going to have to buy an engine I would like too go gas, but if I could not do aerobatics with it I would reconsider.

For this plane you want an engine that will turn a minimum of a 16x6 @ 9,750 RPM for 3D fun. At this size a gasser will be relatively heavy. The new G20 is a nice engine but the price of the engine is a lot more than a glow motor. A cheap gasser like the G26 would be a good option but as you know that engine is a heavy momma ... Another good option for gas would be the MVVS160 ... now the MVVS 160 is not that heavy or expensive and would be the right engine for the Laser 200!

If you want something simple to run with lower cost maybe try a Moki, it runs on straight fuel ... 0% nitro. That may be a good compromise.

I miss my Laser ... hope to get another from the factory in China. I love the plane as they had it all just right even before H9 came out with the F90 and Extra 260.

On the Laser 200, If you had a choice between the Zenoah G20E 1.7 bhp@8500, max rpm 10,000, price $339 or the Evolution 26GT (mvvs160) 3.8 bhp@9000, max rpm 9500price $399.which would you choose? Twice the hp with the Evolution, both weigh the same.
Magazine artical recomended a 24cc.

I would choose the 1.6 EVO.
I believe its th same as the MVVS.
I would also check the specs against independant reviews. Sometimes the manufacturers are a little too 'proud' and get carried away.
Make sure when you are comparing any weights, that you take into account muffler, ignition battery and ignition unit.

From all that I've read, they are the same. Some literature I've read say the weights are without the muffler, ignition battery and ignition unit. while others don't say anything. RC universe called the weight at 33 oz for the g20e and t he 26gt which has to be without the necessary hardware. I am going to download the manual for both and see what it says.

I don't want to overpower the Laser, but don't want to drag it around the field. There is such a differance in bhp between the two.

Folk,

I have a Pacific Aeromodel Lazer 120 with a Saito 125a four stroke and I have a few questions regarding mounting the motor. I'm new to mounting a motor in a cowling and could use a few tips. I'm looking at the plane, like a pilot sitting in the plane, and the throttle servo tray is on the right side. My motor has the throttle linkage on the right side and the needle valve/exhaust pipe on the left side. If it try to mount the motor upright I have to put a big hole in the top of the cowling for the cylinder head and I need to move the throttle tray to the left hand side. If I mount the motor sideways with the head to the right side of the plane, the exhaust and needle valve come out the bottom (this seem like a bad position for a needle valve) and the throttle tray lines up. If I mount the motor with the head to the left side, the exhaust/needle valve come out the top, but the throttle linkage does not line up, which will require some rerouting of throttle linkage wire (which is not so bad). So, I'm not sure which way to mount the motor. Also, if I mount the motor sideways, will the carb be too low for the tank and cause any fuel flow problems? Additionally, how do you determine the right position for the motor mounts on the firewall to get the right centerline and distance from the front of the cowl. Any pictures or ideas would help. Finally, what prop should I run with the Saito 125 since I live at sea level.

Thanks Eric

Eric,

I would suggest you mount the engine so the exhaust comes out the bottom, putting the head to the side. You can turn you carb so the needle comes off the other side. If the throttle tray does not line up with the carb get a flex cable.

To turn the carb remove the two bolts holding it on. Pull the carb down and rotate it when it comes off. Put it back on and reinstall the bolts. It's pretty easy to do. If you need some help I would suggest contacting a local hobby store or someone at a flying field to show you how.

I use flex cables on all of my throttle setups. Dubro makes a really nice one that I use.

Good luck.
