Just saw The Aviator today and I highly recommend it for all you airplane buffs. Take the wife or girlfriend along because it's not all airplanes. There are WW1 and experimental planes of all kinds and I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion about historical accuracy here in the forums.

They used models (flying and static), full scale (flying and ground only) replicas and real planes. Of course lot's of computer generated stuff but a surprising amount of actual film was used and integrated with the computer stuff.

It's surely gonna get a lot of Oscar nominations and it's well deserved in my opinion. I'll be interested to see what others opinions about it here on RCU will be.

I saw it Christmas day and I took the wife, she was very hesitant about going. When it was over she said she really enjoyed it. The flying footage, real or not was great. The big crash scene was the best I ever saw. I too highly recommend it.

I went and saw it yesterday, That HR1 Racer got me drooling. After the way they left us hanging in the late 1940's, you know a sequal is coming. I notice some real footage in some areas. I thought they were going to show actual flight footage of the Spruce Goose. Good flick, I am going to see it again when it comes to the Dollar theater.

History Channel has allready had the "History -vs- Hollywood" on the Aviator. the movie is about a 99.9999% true story. I'm a huge Aviation freak and know alot about Howard Hughes, and cant wait to see it. Hughes is just an AMAZING person, does Leonardo DiCappuccino play him well?? That must have been some big shoes for "Leo" to fill.

well any ways i'm going to see it next week with the wife. Cant wait

Snoop,
The H1 racer was a flying model and a full scale (nonflying) that Leonardo could sit in. They were supposed to use a replica but the guy who built it crashed it and died a few months before filming began. The model was about 15' wingspan carved from foam and glassed.

The XF-11 was a flying model, nonflying model and full scale nonflying also. Bill Hemple flew the model off Catalina Island. The crash was done with miniatures and the plane was on a wire. There is one shot from behind where the plane wobbles a little and yaws, it gives away it's size. The airfoils of the models weren't close to the real thing since it was believed they wouldn't have flown well, but you can't see it on the screen.

The Spruce Goose was a model that had electric outrunner motors and was flown in the same harbor where the original flew. If I saw any historical descrepencies it was the hieght off the water that the plane in the movie flew, it looked a lot higher than the films I have seen of the real thing. The building that they were assembleing the Spruce Goose in looked like the real thing, I have worked in that building.

There was a lot of computer generated stuff that used the models as a base and added layers of stuff around it. It was all very well done.

Glad to hear you liked the movie. I am a sucker for any movie that has airplanes in it. My wife and I are planning to go on New Years Day so I will add my comments after I see it.

crownvic: Re the new flight of the Phoenix, have heard it is almost a exact copy of the original movie with mostly updated special effects that weren't available in the original. Some of those that saw the original say it was better, but liking movies is so subjective anyway. I think the original is a great movie and I watch it every time it is on. Used to really like it on AMC before they started adding commercials.

You're right BB about the spruce goose flying to high, also to far. I saw the clips on TV and noticed that right away as I have seen the original so many times but I still want to see it.

I understand the movie is 3 hours long. Did it seem like it viewed that long, or was the content good enough to seemingly shorten the sitting time?

The movie was pretty good ... too much love crap though. It missed 3/4 of his other noteable aviation historical impacts due to all the wooing. But it's Leo ... gotta get those women in there too.

I'm pretty confident it will take best picture/best actor.

Has anyone rented Napoleon Dynamite?? Now there is a movie with 2 thumbs WAY up. That is the funniest movie since Dumb and Dumber. Might have even topped Office Space. A true cult comedy classic.

We went to see Napoleon Dynamite a couple weeks back. I said to my wife that when this comes to the dollare theater, I am going to miss it. Then I realized I was at the Dollar Theater.

The greatest dancer who ever lived (still) is Jerry Lewis. When he would start doing that jig of his, my guts came out from laughing.

The Aviator was like 2hrs 45 but it kept you interested. There were many areas that came to light that I never knew. Remember whenhe died in the mid 70's, that gas station attendant who claimed he was in Hughs "will." because he helped him one time in the desert when his car broke down. That went on for months.

I just saw the Howard Hughes movie Aviator last weekend. I know that they used a modified Bt-13, models and some CGI for the Hughes racer (because Jim Wright was killed before principle photography). However, there is about 20 seconds of aerial footage that doesn't look CGI or like a model. The plane is flying near a mountain range and does a 180 deg. skidding turn. Does anyone know (not think) if footage of the replica was used at all? It's possible that it was a large RC model but it looked great. I'd like to hear the inside story on that.

Thanks,
Chris

I loved the movie in general. I thought the XF 11 crash scene could have used a little work, just was not sold on it. Probably because the impact did not effect the plane in a realistic way. It really looked like it was on a wire.

BTW, remember when that photographer took a picture of Leo after he escaped from the cockpit? Is there such a photo of HH? And I wonder if they had access to the original wreckage of the XF 11. (if it still exists) Too bad about the replica H1, I read about how the dude reverse engineered it in Air and Space magazine, really amazing stuff. I am surprised there are not more RC models of that plane....

I can't stand Leo but he did a good job on this one.

Nathan

I just saw it also. I think this movie will really have people talking. Not just us aviation buffs. I stayed interested through the entire 3 hours (counting the previews.) Two scenes I thought were amusing, were Hugh's going begging for two more movie cameras for Hell's Angels, and his hiring of the meteorology professor to look for clouds for the same movie.

Someone tell me If I heard this right. It sounded as if Howard accused the Japanese of stealing his H1 design to develop the Zero. I'm trying to decide if Hughes really made the claim. If so, was there any truth to it? Or was it just another example of his paranoia?

I Finally got a babysitter and saw the aviator with my wife. We both loved it. The Spruce goose in the film was flying a bit higher than the real thing IMHO. I loved the racer plane and the plane that he took Kate Hepburn up in. Does anyone know what type of plane(the date plane) that was, and if anyone has kitted it? Very elegant.

I got a kick out of the idea of him needing clouds. He could have brought the project to his home state of Texas and just waited about 5 minutes!

P.S. Wish alot of the dudes would get off DiCaprio's back, gotta say he's a great actor.

Forgot to post something after we went to see the movie. I thought it was great and I must admit, toward the end, ole' Leonardo really started to look like Hughes. I really did like the flying and airline part. I have worked in the airline industry for 29 years and found it fascinating. On another note, I was astounded to see a plane that I have actually seen in person. The twin engine float plane (not sure of the name) that he and Katherine Hepburn flew in was one that was in the reenactment of the Reliability Tour a couple of years back. Here is a picture of the same type of plane that I took when they came to Tulsa. Also included is a single engine version.

You have a picture of the "Spirit of Africa". She's an S-39-CS that Martin and Osa Johnson flew during their trips to Africa and the Far East. Martin and Osa also flew the more famous twin engine S-38 "Osa's Ark".

Chanute KS is the home of the Johnson Safari Museum and these two planes fly into Chanute about once a year. It's facinating how reliable and durable those two designs are after seeing the parts of the world they flew in.

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to point out that not all aviation nuts are male. I saw "The Aviator" this weekend and was very favorably impressed overall. I went, armed with a very critical eye towards the aviation scenes.

I was fortunate enough to meet Jim Wright and see him fly his beautiful H-1 replica at his home airport of Cottage Grove Oregon. I wanted to see how close the 1/2 scale model used in the film was to the big one. I'd say they nailed it.

I am sorry that they did not use any footage of Wright's plane, if that is the case. I know that many. many people were shooting video of him every where he went and there might have even been some folks shooting real film. I suppose The Aviator's crew looked into this and perhaps there just wasn't anything they could use. I don't know. I'm speculating.

I am so glad that Scorsese decided to go with accurate models rather than the strictly computer graphics route. I was reading a few data facts about the models in the recent Flight Journal magazine. The Spruce Goose model weighs 375 lbs and I think the wing span is something like 26 ft! (I don't have the magazine with me at the moment.) And they really flew it in the Long Beach Harbor so the background is authentic.

Being an aviation nut, of course I wanted the whole film to be about the airplanes. But the film was about Hughes. So although aviation was a huge part of his life, there were many other facets to this complicated person.

I didn't know what to expect from DiCaprio playing Hughes. I was pleasantly surprised. He is outstanding.

It is a 3 hour film but it sure didn't seem like it. It just sped by. I want to see it again. There is so much going on that I wasn't able to take it all in during one viewing.

Christina
