I made a battery cable "Y" for my new camera. I hooked it up on my heli and plugged it into my 3-cell lipo battery.
I heard crackle, I heard snap, and as I reached to unplug it, I heard pop.

A 3-cell lipo is somewhere up around 12.5 volts when fully charged. This blew my camera in 1 second flat. The camera says it runs on 5v-8v... and then it comes with a 9v battery to hook up to it. A 9v battery is more like 10v when fully charged... so I figured this thing could handle an extra 2.5 volts. It couldn't.

This was one of those 2.4ghz wireless micro-mini cameras... gone now...

My guess is that you killed the transmitter but the camera should be fine. Most of the all-in-one type cameras have a 5v regulator for the camera but the power to the transmitter however is not regulated. Was it a CMOS camera or a CCD camera?

It was a cmos camera.

I just separated the transmitter from the camera and hooked it up to my digital camera video output. The transmitter still works. So all is not lost, I can attach this transmitter to any camera now.

Funny how there isn't a voltage regulator for the whole thing. I guess it's just a matter of economy.

Is only the transmitter inside the camera melted or also both cmos sensor and transmitter?

Here are the parts, I guarantee that they are working, but the need some cable resoldering... Open the old one carefully and use it as a template for the cables, then when you're finished, just used the the top cover from the old camera to put it on this one...

I have heard a 9v rechargable battery is actually about 7.2 volts when fully charged... they are made of 6 tiny button cells inside the case.

I think that means a 2-cell lipo would work ok for you.

There are a few 9v rechargable batteries out there:
7.2v with 6 small cells
8.4v with 7 small cells
9.6v with 8 small cells

I personally use the 8.4v because when I used a 8cell battery on one of my cameras it got hot after some minutes...

My Hummingbird v.II runs on a 3-cell lipo. I thought I could get away with sharing the battery between the heli and the camera. I'll try it again, but use a voltage regulator for the camera.

Yes, I heard that about 9v rechargables too... but the camera comes with a 9v dry cell, which is up there higher than 9v to start with.. I was just trying to explain my thinking that it might work without a regulator.
