Default Intersting Fire shot

Hi fellow flyers,

Here is a once in a lifetime shot of 3 generations of fire pumpers each named Engine 1. The engine on the right was sold the next day to help pay for the new on on the left.

The interesting thing is two days after this shot was taken a ladder truck from another community backed into the new engine and caused about $15,000 of damage. Now we have the engine in the middle of the shot back in service in place of the new one.

We went from 3 engines to one old engine in 3 days. On top of that, the fire station behind the engines is one of the oldest in the country, it's up for sale to the highest bidder! The men assigned to the station will be living in a trailer untill a new station is built.

Thanks for the comments Logan1Howe. Once the members of the department saw the picture I sold about 20 of them. The Chief and Assistant Chief have the picture hanging in their offices.

Now other department want similar pictures of their equipment to.

Did you shoot this from an RC plane or an adjacent building?

Excellent!
Now all you need to do is to be able to convince the captain that you can use if for recon during a fire and you are home free!

I have been doing r/c aerial photography for about 1 year now. I got my present camera rig from rotary aerials out of New York. You can visit their site at www.rotaryaerials.com

I see that you're using a gimbal mount on your helicopter. How is the camera isolated from vibration from your helicopter?

The gimbal is isolated from the heli by 4 sets of rubber isolation dampners. It completly eliminates any transmitted vibration from the heli to the camera mount. I have shot 35mm with some slow shutter speeds and had no blur. I'ts a very well constructed mount, it also has retractable landing gear for unobstucted camera views of 360 degrees.

Walter, That is a pretty cool setup you have there.

I'm afraid I just have a little Corona and I'm interest in fabricating a little gimbal mount just like yours to carry a small digital camera up. Could you post a post a picture of the gimbal mount and the rubber isolators?

Here are some shots of the isolators. I'm sure you can get some from www.rotaryaerials.com. They work great!

Those look like "Wellnuts" that you can buy at most hardware stores. Thanks for the pictures!

They look alot like "wellnuts", but hey aren;t the same. One end has a embeded bolt and the other end has an embedded nut. The wellnuts only have a embedded nut on one end. The wellnuts will transmit to much vibration to the mount. You must have a rubber buffer between the nut and the bolt without a hard connection.

Hope this helps.

Walter, Thanks for letting me know. That's a pretty neat set-up that you have.

I just tried to lift a small digital camera yesterday with my Corona and my Corona couldn't get it's butt off the ground. :P

So now I'm shopping for a bigger helicopter and the X-Cell gasser looks good. Do you recommend the X-cell gasser or is there another Heli in the same price range that would work better?

I am partial to X-cell helis' I have a gasser and a glow sport. They are well built machines. Minature Aircraft is coming out with a new and improved gasser model, I don't know when, but thats what I hear. Most of the top quality machines by X-cell, vario, bergin, etc are just as good as the other. I picked the X-cell because of ease of getting parts and the reputation of the company.

If you want to have the most versatile heli, don't get one built as a dedicated camera ship. Get a regular gas heli and adapt it for photography. If you research all the available information about it you can make an educated decision....just my 2 cents.
