camera recommendations for UAV...

Hi guys,

I was hoping you could help me out... I'm designing a new UAV as part of my university course and was wondering if you could recommend any off-the-shelf cameras to use in it. I'm looking for low weight, small size, low power and high resolution. It's for military applications, so the beauty is that price isn't much of an issue!

Thanks a lot!

Hello DB,

When you say low power do you mean low current draw or low RF output?

What size airframe are you stuffing this into?

Do you want to stick with low voltage systems (5v) or are you ok with carrying around 12v to power a system?

Regards,
Bill

Low current draw would be ideal... low voltage as well.

We don't have a size for the UAV yet (that's gonna depend on the payload we need to stick in it!) but we want it to be easily portable - so no bigger that 4 feet in any direction.

We've already got a specified Infrared camera that's 1.35"W x 1.45"H x 1.90"D in size and weighs about 150g... so something in that kind of range would be absolutely ideal.

Thanks for the help- Al

DeadBoy,
The Marine Corps over here are using the Ganz model CMh512-CS camera on the Dragon Eye UAV. There is a very good Power Point presentation here: http://heron.nrl.navy.mil/contracts/...esentation.pps
You can find loads of documentation here: http://heron.nrl.navy.mil/contracts/...s01/01ms01.htm

Excellent - thanks a lot mate, we've identified the Dragon Eye as the direct competitor to the kind of thing we've been asked to design, so that info is absolutely ideal!

Thanks!

Hi! DB:

Is it digital infrared camera? How much is the cost and where do you get it from?

Thanks

The digital camera I've seen used on the Dragon Eye is the Indigo Systems Omega
http://indigosystems.com/application...solutions.html

I think I read somewhere they were about 10K!

Yeah, it's the Omega camera, and yeah, it's not cheap!!

Deadboy,
Are you planning on doing any image stabilization or compression on this platform? Do you work with other, larger UAVs that might benefit from the above?

Umm... can you explain what you mean?

I'm afraid I really have no clue about this kind of stuff, so ALL information is appreciated!
