Curare' airfoils


I am working up a new drawing of the Pretner Curare' from one of those Russian (copied) set of plans. The dimensions all work up, but the position of parts do not.

On the plan is a note that the airfoil for the main wing is an N.A.C.A. 0018 and that for the Hoz-stab is N.A.C.A. 0012 section. I drew these out, and they are rather blunt and ugly looking.

It is doubtful this was what was actually used. Does anyone have an idea as to what the real model A/C used for airfoils, for I cannot find a reference for it?

A set of coordinates, a note from some magazine article, a picture of the correctly used airfoils would help in some way.

Check out the RAF30. It's probably more like what you are looking for. But I have no idea if it's the one used on the original or not.

The RAF30 is a pretty close match to the airfoil used on the Minare. The nose radius has to be reduced. I'm manipulating the airfoil profile for the RAF30 in Profili 2. I will then import the root and tip cor files in to compufoil to develop a built up wing plan form for the Minare. Hopefully slowly build it over the winter months for next year.

NACA 0018 and 0012 for stab should work just fine. 18% wing is a bit on the thick side, but has lots of lift for a bit more drag than more commonly used 0015. I normally reduce the leading edge radius on the NACA 00 series, and modify the part aft of about 65% chord to a straight line - I think it helps a bit at low reynolds numbers. I would prefer to use some reflex (reversed camber) aft of 65%, but that tends to lead to covering difficulties.

The templates shown are about right for that plane --we built them and then a jillion Tiporares using same templates.
The ailerons were the then carved block typereally not all that great but then we had no expo radios and std throws were minimal
The last versions I did had same root (fit the glass fuselages we made) and a thinner tip and shorter span - larger ailerons etc., much better plane but of course we had 20 years in between to sort it all out.

Five years later, I'm stillthinking of building that Curare 40. Comparing the German plans. A modified NACA 0016 seems to fit the root rib very well. Working on the tip tomorrow morning. Then the stab root and tip plots. I would like to have the ARF or the Sunshine Kit, but these are too much money and I have extra balsa at home. Also finished my foam wing cutter and bow one weekend in June after 4 years. Works ok. Using the Profili to manipulate the airfoils to get the proper shape.

There may not be a proper fit for any of the airfoils used on the original 60's and 70's models, most were simply modified and tweaked from another airfoil that worked well on another model, and that was pinched from another designer, and he probably used a TLAR section...

True enough, so I'm just tweeking the profiles on the computer I'm justover laying the computer plotsover the plan profiles. When both match, I'll use it.

Do you think you could make 2 wings for me.To be used in prop. configuration.Needs to be about 3/4 thick at thickest point and 8 inches leading edge to tailing edge.And cold you cote them?They are for a new prototype of this (Electric Rotowing) Thanks Charlie
