Certainly the increased lift in the aircraft's symmetry plane (force that goes straight up from the pilot's point of view), contributes to a fighter's ability to do a level turn near 90 degrees angle of bank. You could even come up with a formula relating the required acceleration to bank angle: Nz = 1 / cos(bank_angle). However, I don't think you can overlook the role played by magic here.

At least one wing is useful for roll control, and to hold enough fuel to get back to base. Sometimes new options may present themselves when least expected:
