50cc Extra 260 & OS 300 Twin
I am a previous owner of the 50cc Yark,so I am familiar with your great quality. I am interested in the 50cc Extra and I have a OS300 Twin(49cc) that begs to go in this plane. I am not a 3D pilot and would like to know if you think the 300 Twin will do the job. I am almost certain it will fit in the cowl with no mods. What is the with of the cowl at the front? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gaines,
I have not heard of anyone trying this motor in any of our 50cc planes so I can not comment on how well it will work. The plane is being built at about 16.5 pounds with a DA 50 so if your motor can handle that weight you will be fine. I will get you the cowl size tomorrow.

A buddy of mine has an OS300 Twin that he put in the new Hangar 9 Sundowner.... its a rocket ship that sounds like a Harley. EXTREMELY fast, but he had to keep an uncomfortable amount of speed up or it would stall out. Even a final turn before landing had to be done under a good deal of power.
There should be plenty of room under the cowl for the motor. I don't know what the HP rating is on the OS300, but if it will pull a 17 pound plane, it will pull this one. You might have to get creative to get the exhaust out of the cowl area, but I'm sure it can be done.

RE: 50cc Extra 260 & OS 300 Twin
Thanks fellows for the reply. I have another 300Twin in a GP 1/3 Scale Christen Eagle and it flies great at 17.5 pounds. I made the exausts out of golf club shafts. The step-ups in the shaft act as power bands and it has a awesome sound to it. The engine has 4.0 BHP@7000 rpm's and is a 49cc engine. reyn3545,why was this gentleman having to keep the rpm's up in a turn for landing. Sounds like it wasn't pulling for some reason. Again thanks for the reply.

Oh, it was pulling!! I think the wingspan was a little short for his flying style... he slowed it down for a final turn and approach, the low wing ran out of air, and it was pretty scary! The Sundowner doesn't have a huge wingspan, so you need some speed on it to keep lift.
This extra, on the other hand, will float as long as you want it to. Its without a doubt, the truest flying plane in my fleet. AW does a great job with the finish, and the airframe is smooth and exact. Very little if any adjustment required to control surfaces. If your motor will turn something like a 22x8, you should have a fun plane on your hands. It was designed for a 50 sized plane, so you may have to add some tail weight, but it should be a good flyer.

I checked the weight of the DA-50R verses the 300twin and the twin comes in at 4lbs 5oz. verses 2.94 lbs for the DA-50. I did not realize the DA-50 was that much lighter. I do not know the AUW with the muffler and ignition,I'll have to figure that out. Thanks !

Wow.. I didn't realize that OS was so heavy! Instead of a little lead, you might have to sit on the tail to balance it...but that would be fun too!
