RE: New 85cc Yak 54 QB
Hello all-
Picked up one of these during the great sale that AW was having during the holidays. In the process of moving out west and I'll be picking it up at the AW warehouse on the way out. Mark @ AW was great to work with and promised a tour of the warehouse. I'll have to sneak my 007 spy camera in to take some pictures of AW's top secret prototypes !! I'm looking forward to getting this plane up and running. Subscribed...

I don't think you can get the plane to balance with the DL-100 or the DA-100 on it, the 85cc engines are more than enough. Just to tell you the truth, if you already have the engine I would just go ahead with a 100cc airframe, the cost will be no different as far as the electronics goes. Just a few more dollars for the airframe and you will be glad you did. I have a 75cc Yak with the ZDZ Super 80 in it and it is a rocket! I am now working on my new 100cc Extra 260 and just to see them side by side the difference is well worth the money. My 75cc has all the electronics that would fly the Extra, but it will be flown again this year along with the Extra, I sold my 50cc to fund the 100cc plane, that's why I say if you have the engine go for the 100cc airframe, you won't be sorry.

RE: New 85cc Yak 54 QB
Hello Carl,
We do have several customers flying the 75cc and 85cc Yak 54 with the DA100 engine. However, I think gregman is correct if you have a 100cc engine looking for a home it would be best fitted to a 100cc size airframe. The 85cc airframes with the 85cc engines are “Rockets” and has the best power to weight of any model. Actually many customers are using the 85cc on the 100cc size airframes.
Thank You
Rocco /Aeroworks

I have the 85cc Yak and really like it. If I had a 100 twin laying around I would go for the 100cc Extra 300!! In fact I have a 300 on the way and don't even have a 100 engine(yet).

Here are the guts in my plane. I have the DA-85 on a Greeve's pipe. Rudder servo in the pull-pull position. It balances about 1/2" back of the "book" balance point. There are no provisions for a push-pull rudder servo.

I did not realize how big the 85 cc is, until I saw the photo of your bird on the Robart stand. I have the same stand, so now I have a much better idea of the size. What a sweet plane!! [8D]

10 cc's... Ha ha !! Couldn't resist. Seriously, though. The 85cc has a 4 inch longer wingspan at 98 inches (larger wing area), it uses one servo per aileron instead of two and it has a full legnth tunnel to accept long pipes. There are other little addiitions like the cowl mounting system (no exposed bolts), the fancy AW at the rear of the hatch and of course, the color scheme. That's about all from what I can see. Anyone else have anything to add? Can't wait to get this one going.

Along with the changes MIGJAM stated the 85cc Yak was designed around the New DA85 engine. When the 75cc Yak was designed the DA85 was not available so the 75cc was designed around the 3W75 and ZDZ engines.
The 85cc Yak also comes with a wooden spacer block for mounting the DA85 engine and upgraded hardware. A New and improved two piece landing gear design to give more room for Canister and Pipe.
The plane is slightly larger than the 75cc Yak yet the overall flying weight is the same.
Also, the cowling has no visible mounting bolts and comes pre baffled.
We made many changes to the 85cc Yak over the 75cc version and it has proven to be a winner with our customers.
Thank You

RE: New 85cc Yak 54 QB
I just spent a miserable time last night getting the wing tube to fit smoothly into the wing panels and the fuselage. I have been building for 30 years and have never seen a worse fit than the one I have on this 85cc Yak. I first put sandpaper on dowl and tried using slow speed drill motor which gave weak results.
I called Aerorks and theysuggested using a larger dowl and some foam to bring the diameterup to the size of the fibeglass tube. I did this and sanded and sanded until my arm got sore. It was very frusrtaing to have to spend this much time on something that should never take any work to begin with.
My last QQ had a carbon fiber wing tube and fit like a glove from the start.
By the time I gave up it was still very tight and almost impossible to get the wings togther on the fuselage without a lot of hard twisting.
I tried the carbon fiber wing tube from my QQ 50cc Yak and it slipped in beautifully but had to be cut to fit as it was too long.
Anyone else have this same issue?
I don't feel I should have had to do anywhere near the work I did to make wing tube fit on an expensive airplane.

RE: New 85cc Yak 54 QB
I have had three A/W planes now and they are all really tight at first!! I have found that after about 6 build up/take down cycles they fit fine. It is near impossible to get the wings together the first time. I did some dry runs with one wing on the floor and run the wing tube in and out a few times without twisting it. On mine the build ups are very easy now and I have never sanded or lubed up the wing tube or socket.

Thanks for the info. It was impossible to get the tube in one wing, (on the floor), without breaking something. I was afraid to sand any more as I know it will weaken the sleeve and is a bad idea. Didn't know what else to do. They just wouldn't go in. I am not a weight lifter but not that weak either.

RE: New 85cc Yak 54 QB
Well I made a full day of it today. I have a little over 2 gallons through her now. Power is ridiculous by anyones standards. Most guys at the field thought I stuffed an 85cc engine into a 50cc frame or something crazy. Just unreal power and I have not even touched the needles yet. It is really hard to hover like it is now. It always wants to pull out with just a couple of clicks of throttle. I will get the needles dialed in and set up a throttle curve soon.
I just got in the AW 100cc 300 a few days ago, I will get a motor ordered up Mondayish and get a build started. I am thinking a DA-100 on RE2's or a 3W 110CS with std mufflers???
Here is my plane 99% done!! Sorry to brag on the fine weather here in Vegas!!

Very nice plane! Once I get mine, I am flying the DA 85 with a Pitts muffler. I just love the noise
Is that a DA fuel dot? It looks cool...
Yeah, rub it in...[8D] It is 2° here in western PA [:-]
Again, very nice plane!

RE: New 85cc Yak 54 QB
Wooooooooooooooooo Hooooooooooooooo...My Aeroworks 85cc Yak 54 will ship tomorrow, at the latest. When it arrives, I plan to go over the ultracoat with a fine tooth comb. I am also going to break out my thin CA and do a little work with the key joints, etc...I will complete the wings and stabilizers, then epoxy the rudder hinges. Then, seal the hinge gaps.
Getting my Uncle Charlies Magic Oil ready to go (for the hinges). It works great! time to start saving for that DA 85
I cannot wait!! This is my second gasser BUT it is twice as big as my Evolution 45 GX/2...

Hit of the field... ?? I wouldn't go that far. J/K, that thing is badazz. It has the best power to weight ratio of anything I think I've ever seen. I hope to get mine going soon. Equipment should be arriving Wednesday. If mine (with ZDZ 80RV) is anything near what yours is, I'll be very happy. Lookin good !!
