Default Alaskan Birthday flight

Hi all,
Scanned this treasured picture of Mom,Dad and myself taken several years ago 1957. We were just getting ready to fly out of Anchorage I think. To save my-------I can't identify which 'Piper' this was?I can tell you I was in the back so called jump seat- Ever Fly over Alaska's blue water and see a Polar bear walking on ice ? I did and now it is a so called Flash Bulb Memory. We landed on an abandoned steel matt landing strip used during War II 'I think' and explored this old Russian Orthadox Church.

No my Dad regularly flew while stationed in Fairbanks and later Anchorage. It was my birth day so,Dad flew us on a "cross country flight,"we landed on an old WWII abandoned flying field which as mentioned had a steel matt runway.. The flight over a vast horizon of Alaska's vast areas of water and ice burgs was memorable indeed for me. To look down and see a Polar bear on an ice sheet was fascinating!

Tim that is one of the reasons for this post as I would like to know which model Piper so I can build a replica. The photo was taken in 1957 so--I'd imagine the paint scheme visible in the picture was "factory paint"

I'm not sure of the number I think a pa22 Super Cub thats when they enclosed the engine in the cowl and set the seats side by side with a jump seat in the rear. The Tri Pacer had a nose gear.

Looks like a PA-15 or PA-17 Vagabond to me, The aft fuselage bowes in rather then out... that's the easiest way to tell the difference between the Vagabond and the Pacer/Colt/Clipper ect... then again it could be the PA-16 Clipper... I know less about the PA-16 then the rest.

Great story! Thanks for sharing. My dad had his private lic. in the late 70's and early 80's. No polar bears in WI. Sounds neat what you saw.
