He reached the halfway mark at 7:05 AM UTC. He's currently over China. My how times have changed. He took off from and is to land in Libya, and he's currently flying over China. How this team got permission to enter various nation's flight space must be an interesting story.

He took off from Salina, Kansas and thet is where he will land.

You're right...it must have been a logistical nightmare to get clearance to fly over all those countries but since Richard Branson is the main sponsor, I'm sure he used his Virgin Airlines connections to get those permissions.

He's way past halfway done, now...Go Steve!!

Doh! [sm=redface.gif] When I first looked at the site I saw the tracking arrow over Libya, and thought that was the starting point. Thanks Don.

At least they don't have to hunt for winds to carry them over the right borders. Remember the balloon flights?

This is very exciting. I love what these guys are doing. Almost a new Golden Age of Aviation we're witnessing.

I asked the site manager there to post the flight path.. the solitary arrow doesn't tell you squat about where it was and how it got where it is...

It's actually quite simple. Just make and file a flight plan. The ICAO would take care of the rest.

I am a bit surprised that he got permission to fly over Libya and China. I think Fossett had trouble with them during one of his balloon flights. I remember him having to try different altitudes to find winds that would steer him clear of one or both countries. And there were a lot of last minute phone calls and pleas. I guess with an airplane this time, it was easier to arrange a predictable flight path that would keep him away from sensitive areas.

Updates on the flight can be found at http://www.aero-news.net/ . At this point he might be having some troubles but even if he abandons the attempt I'm willing to bet he will at least get a record for jet distance on this flight. Still a truly amazing accomplishment.

Yep, just heard on the news that he is going to decide whether or not to abort within the hour. There is either a fuel totalizer problem or an actual fuel leak. They're trying to track down the problem.

He has definitely claimed the jet distance record and taken it away from the mighty B-52.

If you live in Northern Arizona...LOOK UP!

If you see a single slow moving contrail, that is the Global Flyer.

Go Steve Go!!
