FULL SCALE RC FLYING LAWS IF ANY?
Are there any laws regarding the flying of a full scale RC aircraft?
Would like to build and fly a full scale Albatros dv with a ford 300 inline six.

You will not be able to get anyone to insure it and God help you if you crash it and hurt someone, or destroy something without any insurance.
Not worth the risks involved.

Dude, if you are building full scale, why not build an RV or something? Building a full scale airplane you can't fly in is a weird thing to do.

RE: FULL SCALE RC FLYING LAWS IF ANY?
There's a guy in TX that has a very nearly full scale R/C plane, which, IIRC was something like an Extra or some other sporty looking model. He brought it to one of the CAP airshows at San Marcos, TX one year. I didn't see it in person but did get to look at pictures of it. It was powered by an HKS 700E with a Powerfin 3 blade prop.
The engine alone is an expensive piece of hardware even in something you ride in while it flies (around $8000 installed last I checked), much more so in an R/C machine.
No idea how he worked the control surfaces and etc., I'm sure it involved some pretty monster servos tho....
He had more $ by a large margin in that thing than I have in mine that I sit in (powered only by a lowly 503).
Personally, if something like that crashed somewhere, I'd rather be in it and die than have to endure the life-long litigation that would follow if I survived. Besides, with a stick and rudder pedels instead of servos, there's no worry about PCM lockout due to ignition noise and etc...

I think you started this whole thread just so you could say 'throaty roar'.

Thanks guys. But it would have a great throaty roar!

I think you should do it if you want to. Especially in AZ. There are plenty of places you could fly it WAY away from people/structures/household pets/endangered wildlife...

Keep in mind that aircraft under 55lbs are unrestricted but once you go over that, some FAA laws start to kick in. I'm sure there are plenty of giant scale guys on the forum who have experience with that. I think that there are some inspections involved during your build and so on. But I would like to see it happen. Just how are you going to get it to the field? Good luck

Yes, it would have to be way out in the desert. Nevada is even better. Nothing for miles and miles.
I've found some surplus servos that operate on 12V and have 110 lb of pull. The engine would have an aternator and battery so no power supply problems. It could be done.

Yes, it would be way over 55lb. The original Mercedes engine alone in the Albatros DV was 180 hp @1800 rpm and weighed over 700lbs! The whole aircraft was over 1800 lbs wet I think.
One would have to remove the wings and cables and tow it on a trailer. Better pack a lunch.

Glad you don't live in CA, with a tag like Napalm-man you would have Homeland Security sitting on your doorstep. Norm

Hi, not much in a name but combine the name with wanting to build an airplane with no pilot aboard will get some brittle-brained fed to thinking and you could have trouble, Norm
every see anybody that had survived a Napalm attack?

Yes, and currently they are exploring the General Aviation ranks for possibilites of a private aircraft being used. It won't work because they are too small but these guys have to keep their jobs so they are looking at everything regarding aviation.
About 10 years ago I did two different stories on full-scale ultralights being flown by R/C carrying experiemental parachutes. They several different types of ultralgihts that were designed built and flown by Scale Master Modeler Jack Buckley who at the time was working with the Army's parachute center near Framingham, MA. Jack would fly them up to about 800 feet or so and drop the chute equipped with telemetry so they could see what was happening to the chute. Norm

No doubt. The possibilities are endless in general aviation. No metal detectors, security people, all the back yard air strips, ect!
