Bruce,

I've also heard of the Tracer/Willy Fudd being referred to as a "Stoof with a Roof" because of its radome rotating antenna.

That is true. Same airframe and power plants as the S-2 - different tail and of course the radome 0n the E1. On the E1, the radar antenna rotated inside the airfoil-shaped radome shell. On the E2, the radome itself rotated.

Never saw an S2 or E1 while I was in but we did have C1 Traders come aboard. It was a real thrill for me to hear and see those planes with their big radial engines do deck runs to launch, when everything else needed cats.

You ever hear of thumping the Hummers?

I've been "hot-nosed" by our friendly fighter cover but can't say I've ever heard of thumping the Hummer. Being hot-nosed, by the way, involves having one or more of the fighters come in from behind and below, kick into afterburner and then pulling up as they pull ahead of the Hummer.

I had a couple of F-14 Tomcats do that to our P-3C over the Med....

Very cool... We had no way of knowing they were coming... made the pilots jump

With our search radar, it was kinda tough to sneak up on us so we knew it was coming. Even with the warning, it still got your attention.......
