Crash Sequince with Charlston Heston
In the last scene while Charlton Heston was bringing in a damaged Hell Cat for landing on the carrier at the battle of Midway his plan hit the round down and left wing with canopy rolling on the deck covered in flame. The plane actually was a jet being flown by LCdr. Charles F.Duncan. landing on the USS Midway and contrarily to the description given by narrator, it was not a down thrust of wind that cause problem it was total loss of hydraulics . The plane hit the round down and split into sections with the left wing and just forward of the canopy rolling on the main deck engulfed in flames..Charles told me that after the crash crew got hold of him if was out of the wreckage in less than 5 min. After which he was in his quarters having a Medial shot of whiskey with minor burns to his left arm. He continued his career and obtained the rank of Capt of the US ESSEX Before he retired. I got to meet Cmdr. Duncan in 1972 while serving with him at SURFACE EFFECT SHIP TEST FACILITY Located in Lexington Park, Great guy and a great story.
Just gives thous warm fuzzy felling when the incident is rebroadcast and you knew that man personally.
