RE: I got a response from my Senator
Im sorry but I dont like the idea of a SUA flying over my backyard when my 3 yrs old is playing in his swingset.
Or is it that you dont mind SOME UAS operators, but you dont like other UAS operators when that UAS flys over your house at 2700'?
Or is it haviing nothing at all to do with WHO is piloting the craft,
you just dont military drones 2000' over your house, you dont want sherrif drones over your house at 2000' and you dont want commercial drones over your house at 2000'... lets see, I think I missed one... oh, and you dont want recreational drones over your house at 2000'.
Dont forget to call the Gov-Of-Mexico
and tell the entire country of Mexico to stop patrolling their border with their drones,
cause we ALREADY had a GOM Drone crash onto an American's property (fortunately it didnt hit his kid on their swingset)
from Lops link
To dispell much of what has been said about CBO's, I recommend reading the law governing CBO's as standards bodies.
That law is available here it is OMB.119 and defines what a Standards Body is as well as what they can and can't do.
Excerpt:
" A voluntary consensus standards body is defined by the following attributes:
(i) Openness.
(ii) Balance of interest.
(iii) Due process.
(vi) An appeals process. "
I do not know of a single sUAV or Model Aircraft organization that meets a single one of those criteria

even the nazis had due process, its just that their process was horrible, but they followed it well.
AMA are no nazis, I'm just saying Due Process is an easy criteria to meet... anybody including bad guys can meet it)
wow, they want to read the laws and follow them... and you/AMA dont?
Cause the AMA I know wants to obey the laws and protect ALL aeromodeling,
if you are against either of those, maybe you shouldnt be in AMA
Speaking of OMB119,
how much has the Academy taught the membership about OMB119?
Has AMA even provided a link for members to educate up on?
As CBOs go, looks like one is educating the public, and one is not only failing to teach members about OMB119 but also provided a chopped at the knees version of sUAS ARC that keeps folks in the dark as to what was recommended for UAVs compared to MA.
Is it really the AMA's new motto- The less you know the better ?

RE: I got a response from my Senator
Cletus
why do we use the term CBO instead of just saying AMA?
The answer to that question has been brought up MANY times before since the ARC came out.
The problem is that the answer is not good news for the AMA-Only crowd
so they just pretend the question hasnt been answered many time before
(like the way even Silent Aviator has referenced the answer many times)
The feds say CBO instead of AMA for a reason.
If we were in a membership org that promoted EDUCATION we would all know that reason
for the past 3 years now
edit: er, I meant it that Silent has answered the question, not that he pretended
Looks like even if your bro 'participates within' the CBO (why do we use that euphemism for AMA..

RE: I got a response from my Senator
While I have gotten a reply from one of my senators, the second has not even acknowledged that I had written him, nor have I heard back from my congressman. And this is indicative of the attitude in Washington were they tend to ignore the input of the voters who they represent, and tend to listen more to the paid lobbyist, here in is another part of the problem. We have got to keep writing and put pressure on them till they acknowledge us.

I've gotten exactly the response from my senators that I expected - nada, zip, zero. Of course since those senators are Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi I'm not really surprised, especially given that I'm a registered Republican.

We have to stop this! It’s government control and involvement in our activities and hobbies. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for the FAA to control this sport. We have been flying for 75 + years without their involvement, why start now?! So they can further tax us, take our money and control every situation. Where is the fun in this??
Imagine the effect this will have on the industry as a whole. Children will now have to acquire a LICENSE to fly their toy? Ridiculous. Look at the effect occurring in General Aviation. General aviation is dying. It is nearly impossible to pass the written examination and check rides, not to mention the expense. Soon they will want us to have FAA CERTIFIED parts on our radio control airplanes, exactly as they do on full size airplanes, which adds 5x the price to every item.
And we have to stop the AMA first.
It looks to me as though the AMA started all this so people will have join them and pay them, and then it spiraled out of their control.
The AMA is only an insurance company; a nonprofit organization that is trying to make money on your back, selling you credit cards and more. For example, you have to pay your AMA on the first of the year to get full year of membership. If you register in December, you will only get 30 days since it’s comfortable for them to start it on the new year and get a full price from you rather than prorate your fee.

Well, good for them. If you cannot pass your written or the checkride, you have no place in a cockpit. Take up boating FCOL!
We can see pranoia at its wost in some of these messages.

I dont want Sheriff drones over my house,
I dont want military drones over my house,
I dont want commercial drones over my house,
I dont want recreational drones over my house, or over NYC, Washington DC or Philadelphia. (Remember 9/11/01)????
Thanks God the FAA doesnt want them either. They are here to protect us, against enemies foreign and domestic.

RE: I got a response from my Senator
If you didn't get a response by now, write again....
If still no response, call their office.
If you are still not happy at their response, show up at a local event, usually on the weekends.
If you quit after the initial AMA-provided form email, you're really not putting in much of an effort, are you?

RE: I got a response from my Senator
I got a response as well. I think I like mine better, because it says common sense may prevail!
Dear XXXXX:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on S. 223, the FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act.
Air travel in the United States should be the safest and most efficient in the world. However, I share your concerns over unnecessary regulations on model airplanes. On February 17, 2011, the Senate approved S. 223 with the inclusion of an amendment that would remove model airplanes from FAA regulation of unmanned aircraft.
As this legislation continues to move through the legislative process, I will be sure to keep your comments in mind. Thank you again for getting in touch with me.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

Maybe it would have said that, if there was not that big IF&Requirements condition on the protection
Its like saying your freedom of speach is protected IF you meet criteria the gubberment can set on a whim
is not the same as saying your freedom of speech is
Sure that Senator says model flying will be protected,
but for folks not 'within' a cbo it surely will NOT be protected

RE: I got a response from my Senator
If there are not going to be harsh FAA regulation of model aircraft,
then why is AMA working so hard to get itself exempted from exactly those regulations
If I am a paranoid kook for believing the regulations AMA believes are coming,
doesnt that make the guys running AMA paranoid kooks also?
Perhaps if I believe what AMA believes is coming,
I am just as rational as they are
But its a free country, call AMA Leadership and me paranoid foilheads if you want

I gotten no response from Scott Brown, nor do I expect one from him.
Nothing from Barney either. (for all of you complaining about your folks in Washington, how would you like to have him as you guy)
This is indicative of elected representatives that feel they know what's best for us.
I just going to keep sending them mail til they get sick of having to throw all that paper in the trash and break down and reply to me.
