Default Poll - What's your heaviest model?

How heavy do you fly? I remember when a 10 pound model was a heavy one. Now we have 1/4 scale, 1/3 scale and eve 1/2 scale RC models flying. In addition technology has enabled us to build models of larger planes so even at 1/6 scale you can easily top 55 pounds or more. So what's the heaviest you fly?

Is your heaviest RC plane in the under 15 pound range? 15 -30 pounds? 30 - 45 pounds? 45 - 55 pounds? Over 55 pounds?

Currently my heaviest is 11 pounds.

My heaviest RC model is 16 oz, my control line heavy weight is about 25 oz. The lightest one I own is 5 oz powered by a Cox .Pee Wee 020. All are glow powered except for 1.
I just can’t understand why folks think the hobby is so expensive!

049, I have to say that I really love your tag line... the leading edge of trailing edge technology!

Cool , good work Appowner , it's nice to see someone else post up a Poll .

Now , I haven't answered yet , because I'm not quite sure how to best represent my flying . I've got a couple of twenty pounders that I seldom fly , and I've got a bunch of .40 to .60 sized five or ten or so pound more or less models that I fly far more often . Got a few really small parkies that I fly the most of all , at an RC model friendly local park .

So I guess I'm only "seldom" a major risk , per the Poll ?

Go with the heaviest. My intent is several things. One is to simply show how prolific the larger models have become since a 10 pounder was considered big. And from the looks of it so far, at least half have gone beyond the 15 pound mark.

But at the same time, I put it in this section because I wanted to draw on the demographic engaged in AMA discussions.

Now if you must know, I have one model in the 22-23 pound arena. But it's a sailboat so it doesn't count.

Thank You for the response , I voted my biggest , so I'm in the 15 to 30 pound category . I will say that in the last 30 years the size of our models has increased considerably .

PS , when I was in London , there were huge RC sailboat races in a place called Hyde Park that I watched as often as I could . Those guys were ever bit as skilled as us RC flyers are , that's for sure .

Just to clarify here, is the point to demonstrate that larger airplanes pose more risk to the operators and spectators?

Since you obviously can't take the poll at face value, I'd suggest you not participate.

And maybe stop looking for threats behind every tree?

Doesn’t say anything about why the data is being collected.

Does there always need to be a motive behind a question?
Then again, I build boats. Do I need to have an agenda to be in this forum or should I just limit my posts to the boating forum?

Dave, when I participate in any Poll I would like to know how the information is going to be used, the same as some participants in this forum like to know what their AMA dues are being used for. As for your participation in the airplane forums, I see you as being knowledgeable and I have at times seen you share your knowledge here and on Facebook so I can appreciate those posts as they are helpful. If there are no secondary motives Appowner simply has to state that and I will believe him and move on. So far his response would indicate otherwise.

Speedracerntrixie, you and Appowner should just get married. It would make fighting so much more convenient.

I'm not the one making a big fuss, all I did was ask a question which I felt was appropriate. If he has a motive I think it should be disclosed to those participating in his poll. If he is not prepared to answer questions pertaining to his PUBLIC poll then perhaps he shouldn't have posted the poll in the first place.

I didn’t nessesarily say there is a motive, I asked a question rather then jump to a conclusion. I gave the benefit of the doubt. Why so much resistance to answer a simple question?

it must be a sad life to always be expecting some ulterior motive in the things others are doing/saying.

sometimes, face value is just face value.

just accept what he says in post 5 for what it is, and go on with life.

Are you really claiming to know what his reasons for this Poll are? Appowner is fully capable of answering for himself is he not?

BTW , if he just said something along the lines of satisfying his curiosity when I first asked we wouldn’t still be having this conversation.

Sigh just except some people are never happy unless they perceive themselves as the center of the universe LOL.

Me I have flown 10 lb rc aircraft attempting to lift 45 lbs payload. I say RC aircraft not models because these are different designs by university students for heavy lift competitions. In Canada legal limit without special permission is 75 lbs. Have had a few models at about the 40/50 lb range. Have plans for a 1/2 scale cub still studying how to build it and keep it light.

Didn't fill in the poll because I fly most anything from indoor to heavier scale models. Love them all though scale is my favorite.

Keep it civil boys, state your case, whatever it is, and don't take pot shots at each other.

Thank You Andy , Merry Christmas to you and all the rest of the AMA forum regulars !

Now , If I may , I'd sure love to see a few pictures of the models of the weight you fly . To me a twenty pound model is huge and to see models 50 or better pounds would be great .

PS , this is an open request to not only Andy , but to all who fly the big ones , let's see some of that balsa overcast !!!!

Then close the thread please.

And could someone fix the &*$#@ Log in servers? It seems I'm only on one of them. The other one I constantly get an "invalid user" error.
Not the first time I've mentioned this.
