Hey RC,
Always tell them the truth. No BS to the newbees, as they will find out who they can trust and who they can't. People will compare notes.

RCO when I start out instructing with a newbie, he gets a 2-4 hour ground school. When talking to visitors and the question surfaces, I make one point and try to make it clear.

Do not fall in love with a RC model airplane. To do so is the most definite way that I can think of to gross Heart-Break.

If I find that a newbie is in such love relationship I may go ahead and solo him out, however I still caution him that the heart-break will happen. It happens every time by not later than the 3rd airplane, usually the second.

That's life.

Well the meeting is over. You don't fall in love with a plane is true. What you tell a newbee is to go to the club meeting and watch the turkey shoot and you are the turkey! Accidents happen that you can not control but don't admit you were in the wrong, alway's find some one or some thing to blame it on. If you take the blame you are as big of an Idiot as I am and was!!!!

Darn sudden gust of wind.... wait... maybe it was interference.... or that control arm linkage adjustment.... I bet it had something to do with that loop I pulled earlier.... batteries moved and threw off the CG.... all I know is... it wasn't MY fault the plane crashed!!
