Is the AMA insurance valid should an out-of-control electric put somebody's eye out during a private gym session?

why wouldn't it? unless you didn't establish a safe flight line and practice safe practices, it is the same as outdoor flying, except you don't need to put your name/address/# on the model.

was this a gym that you borrowed a corner of while others were using it? then I would say you don't stand a chance.

Just a hypothetical question.
Nobody is in the gym except "airplane people".

All that matters is that the flying activity was taking place in accordance with the Safety Code. And there is a new one for 2005. There are some changes from 2004. Most notably that it is now 8 hours from bottle to throttle.

Hmm. FAA did away with 8 hour rule back when a Northwest Airlines crew proved they could stay drunk far longer than 8 hours. The industry standard now is : zero blood alcohol. For controllers also. Many, many people had to modify thier lifestyles, including me. But I do believe the zero blood alcohol rule is a much better rule. Either standard requires testing. I don't suppose AMA has random alcohol testing in mind. And I doubt they will be testing immediately after an accident. I suppose the rule is a nice reminder for those of us sober enough to read it. Serenity now !!!

Yes, checking blood alcohol levels before flying will make model aviation much safer. That will also reduce our liability exposure. Enough said, lets make that a rule also.

Hope folks don't mind if intrude on this thread to address your question.

A gym is not significantly different than any other flying venue as far as AMA insurance is concerned - at least they have not stated otherwise.
A condition for your AMA insurance to be valid is that you are in compliance with the Safety Code. Do read it. As someone else pointed out, you don't have to put your name/AMA number on your model if flying indoors. That's the only difference in SC (ergo, insurance conditions) that I am aware of that is peculiar to your choice of venue.

It has been said here many times that if you have a question regarding AMA insurance, you should direct it to Carl Maroney at AMA HQ. He is the only individual in the world that knows/decides what AMA insurance covers and where and when, so we keep our fingers crossed that Carl doesn't get hit by a truck. It works differently than with a real insurance company where you get a copy of the policy you can read and determine for yourself what is/is not covered.

Don't tell anybody what you are doing and there won't be any reason to make rules against it. You aren't using LiPo batteries in your gym flying sessions, are you?
