Youch! At that price, it darn well better have all new material, or it won't sell squat...

Well, I gotta jump on the wagon. I find it distasteful that the AMA allowed/endorsed this type of advertising.

The way the letter was written was obviously a clear attempt at trickery. Hoping that maybe they can scam somebody into sending money.
What a joke. I can't believe I belong to and support an association that would play that game with me. I guess we don't have much choice though.

Honestly, I've got to agree with Crash90. My initial reaction was distaste that the AMA chose to involve themsleves in something unprofessional like this. Too much like all the other unsolicited junk we receive, and too much like those old Columbia House / BMG music type things that we all probably tried once back when.

I know it's hard to find good ways to raise money, but the AMA needs to consider the members expectations. This is an organization that many of us are forced to belong to if we want to fly, and a many of us expect them to adhere to a higher level of professionalism.

The letter is clear, but I still find it tacky as all get out.

This is the kind of crap you get when people you don't like get your name and address...not an organization you willingly join.

I'm gonna write the AMA and tell them to take me off such list, and next year if they continue this junk to put a check on the AMA membership "Check here if you don't want any unsoliceted mail" that really has nothing to do with the AMA other than money making.

I think we all have to respect AMA for producing a video that shows modeling as a worthwhile endeavor. What I cannot understand, however, is how an organization that has safety as one of its main goals could allow showing someone starting an engine in such a totally unsafe manner. Tethering a plane with a stake and a rope is plane dumb. A more serious situation is the guy kneeling to the side of the plane in direct line with the prop. We have all seen props spin off and we know what direction they are heading. This poor guy is exposing some mighty important body parts to a high reving saw blade. Didn't anyone at AMA check this out before the video was released? Never mind if the video is worth nine bucks; it surely makes our organization look ridiculous to show the world such a careless and dangerous practice. Folks, don't try this at home!

Let's see:

I get something for free - Some people think that is bad. Go figure!

I have the option to send it back at their expense. - Some people think THAT is bad. Go figure!

I can send in $9 for this one and can then start to receive more. - Some people think that is bad too. Go figure!

I see nothing wrong with this offer and am happy I received it. The video is OK, but not much in it that interested me. I fly sailplanes (not covered) and small electrics.

Who cares if JR is displayed everywhere. If they made a contribution to its production, great if not, who cares.

Overall I thought it was nice quality photography and sound. I found the flying sequencies boaring but nicely done. Each plane was on the screen too long.

The instructional segments were OK but not much useful info. Not enough time for much useful info.

So, as a promotional sampler it was OK. Not interested in the coin. It will go in the drawer.

If there were indepth videos on a given subject, then I would be interested. While $9 is cheap for a DVD video, I would not buy this one and would not recommend it. Good quality but nothing that interested me. I have 2-3 GB of more interesting plane videos that I have downloaded from the internet.

I think a how to series might be very interesting, especially to new members. Here are some topics I might like.

How to build a wood kit.
How to make a plane out of foam board
How to apply covering.
How to set-up and tune a glow engine
How to size and test electric motor systems
How to apply scale details
How to perform aerobatics - theroy, radio, actual flight ( could be a series)
Preflight procedures and first flight procedures for a new plane
Teaching yourself to fly
Flying safely
how to fly 3D
How to hunt for thermals
Intro to slope soaring
Basics of Aerotowing

Just my thoughts

I do not want videos from the AMA. I too got the AMA DVD. By the time it got to me it was already opened by somebody in the family and the return packaging was gone. I thought it was free.

Yesterday I got a collection notice from the AMA for the $9 video. It's not worth $9. It's re-used footage. I called the toll free number on the notice, 877-708-4868, to see where I should return the DVD. In one quick call to woman at AMA negated the $9 charge, said keep or donate the DVD and removed me from future mailings of stuff like that. It was easy.

Hmmm, the notice I received said that since I didn't request the video (it was sent to me without my having asked for it) I wasn't obligated to do anything. I will keep the original DVD. Maybe I'll watch it again, maybe I won't. I will keep my $9 and I will expect the AMA to not send me any more unsolicited DVD media.

I never got the video, but I got a reminder letter asking for the $9. I was very dissappointed that AMA would do something like this. Smells a bit scammy to me.

I gave my DVD to the local hobby shop to play in loop on the tv/vcr. I contributed that way, I dont plan on buying anything like that. I know AMA may make some money per say, but it seems very sleezy and I think they need to rethink this 1988 marketing strategy.. Best of luck whatever.

Gee, I didn't get the DVD or the letter reminding me to pay. And yes, I do buy videos from Propwash and SKS. []

I too received the DVD and thought about keeping it until I examined it and found that the surface was severly scratched.

Looked like I was the 1000th guy to get it. I'm sure not going to pay $9.00 for something in THAT condition.

Packed it in the box with the "Collectors" coin and sent the silly thing back at THEIR expense.

Makes me wonder what those idiots in Muncie are doing with my money!

I liked the video and the coin. I thought about keeping the coin in the plastic like a good baseball collector would. Then I decided to take it with me golfing with my friends (who don't fly and would not appreciate it). I decided it would make a great ball marker. They laughed and called it a 'man-hole cover'. The AMA symbol actually can help you line up the putt. Now you may find this all stupid and disconnected, but I shot the lowest round that I have shot this summer. When life gives you lemons...
