closed landfill

Our Club is discussing a model flight field with the town council on a closed landfill. A previous attempt was turned down during a series of bizarre political circumstances.

Does anyone have a list of model flight fields that are located on closed landfills? The information would be helpful convincing the council members that model flying at an old style landfill would not damage the landfill.

A closed land fill is a thing of beauty to a modeler. If you can establish a flying field on one you don't have to worry about some developer coming along and putting in another sub-division. Few are in close proximity to any planned development for that matter. You might be limited to what structures you can put there but aside from that they are a prime source of flying sites. Of course you have to watch out for the golfers as they too like to get new courses established on public property.

We gotta be super careful what we do as far as improvements. No driveway or other permanent markings. Even the runway is temporary. We also need to be cautious about what gets pounded into the ground because of the clay tile covering everything. Even though it is on the top of a mountain the grass is always wet too.

Our club was actually kicked off of a landfill. It turns out that soft ball fields make much better PR.

I belong to The Sturbridge Lawn Darts, no. 13 on Tommy Gun's list, above. The town is happy to have us take care of the site for them. We keep it mowed, keep the brush off of it, and watch for trespassers that like to come down and tear up the grass and cap with their quads and motorbikes. It's always a precarious situation, though. If we make it too nice, we fear other groups in town will want to appropriate the site for a ball field. The other thing going for a landfill site is it's usually a fairly remote area ... who wants to live near a landfill? So noise is less of a worry than it could be, and soccer moms are less likely to want to drive down there to bring kids to a game.

Our pavillion is built on cement blocks laid on the surface. We're not allowed to dig. Some of our guys got a hold of an old refridgerator truck body that was set out on blocks as a shed to keep the lawn tractor in.

The site level is high ... the edges of the field slope away pretty steeply, so it seems that the surrounding trees aren't half as high as they really are. That's not so good when a plane is snagged by one

The grass does tend to stay wet due to the poor drainage. That's not so good when it's rainy for a while, but it helps keep the grass green longer in the heat of the summer.
