Default Voting members in AMA

Do members that vote in an AMA chartered club..........have to be AMA members?

Can they vote in an AMA chartered club without being AMA members?

I don't know.. Thought I saw it somewhere on the AMA site

To my knowledge, in order to be a member of an AMA chartered club you must be AMA. unless the local club has a social membership or non-flying membership option. It would then be up to the clubs by-laws to determine if these memberhsips have voting powers. The only requirement for AMA membership for a AMA chartered club directly refers to flying at the sight. As president of our club, we have reviewed these options in the past, for the more senior non flying members...we would rather they did not have the right to vote on issues that effect those who do fly.

I do not think the AMA requires an AMA membership to be a member of club, and we all know that the membership is required to fly at an AMA insured field. So the I beleive the answer to your question would be "No" but again that would depend upon the club. The AMA has thus far, in my personal opinion, been smart enough to leave the clubs to their own government. If they want members of the club to be involved in the politics of such, they can allow it. Why should the AMA delve into the everyday "running" of a group or club? The clubs entire premise as described by the dictionary is "a group of people organized for a common purpose".
SCPREZ is basically lamenting what I have said for years, if you have members who vote but do not fly, they do not usually have the heart and mind of those who do. Why not create a "social" membership without voting rights and priviledges that is basically granted for free just so those individuals can feel a part of the group, but not neccessarily prevent it's course of action?

Easy to find on the site. Go to AMA Membership Manual and then to the Bylaws. The Membership Manual is a good thing to keep in your "My Documents" on your computer.

AMA BYLAWS
ARTICLE III
Membership

//SNIP//

Section 2. The Chartered Club is the local division of the AMA. It is the
vehicle for recognition of any geographic grouping of AMA members.

(a) The Charter provides the local organized group with added
insurance protection for the club, the club officers, and flying site
owners. Other services such as assistance in acquisition and retention of
flying sites, materials for public relations, and legal counsel, when
necessary are available to the Charter Club.

(b) All members of the Chartered Club, including officers, must be
members of the AMA (except Associate members who are not officers,
defined as a wife, husband, child, or parent of an active club member
who does not operate models as part of the club activity); such member
must be listed on the Charter as an associate.

//SNIP//

My club has listed a number of Associate Members from time to time, and listed them on the Charter as non-AMA and non flying. It has never been a problem, probably because it is within the requirements of the AMA Bylaws. [8D]

Voting rights in our club are restricted to full Open-Class AMA/Club members.

I think you got that backwards.

Well here I was obviously mistaken. For many years in every club I have ever been a member of, it was interpreted that the AMA membership was required to fly at a club (AMA insured) field, however a social membership could be made in a club. I have never been in a club whereby officers were not AMA members, which if you are familar with the club paperwork you know that cannot happen, since the AMA sends you a list of verified AMA members to compare to your role and ask for officers to be listed with address and AMA number.
I personally now see this as something that has the potential to be a problem and something that some people may not be aware of. Of course I know it is in the rules, but like most I may have over read it, or taken someone else's interpretation of it.
I am glad you asked the question JC, and appreciate Hoss digging it out and straightening me out on this fact. Makes it easier to require AMA membership at the club field now.

I will also thank him for digging it out..... thanks hossfly.

The officers of a certain AMA club I know of secretly (so they think)
gave a "special membership" to a certain members wife ....with voting rights...
After the membership previously voted down her motion to give voting rights
to the wifes without having to be AMA members.

Voting rights in that club are restricted to full Open-Class AMA/Club members as well.

I will forward this to President Happy Hippy for his enjoyment.

Mr Casey,

Please explain to us how what happens in some "other" R/C club, AMA or not has any freakin effect on you, or is any or your business.

And while your're at it, why not try and consider all the GOOD you could do for your own club were you not so busy worrying about a club you
are not even a member of. Were you to expend HALF of the energy to that end, rather than direct it as you have in the recent past I bet you could possibly even convince some folks weren't a total tweak!

I keep reading in various threads of late how JC says others are bringing up a certain club during the course of the thread, then requests such thread closed down because someone else strayed. I don't know how much more transparent your posts can become Mr. Casey.............

I am about to say something with complete sincerity and not as a joke a flame a dig or anything other than the heart felt truth. I swear on my children's lives Mr. casey, I feel so sorry for you.

This has gone on for months and well years and it is just not funny anymore...It's just sad.
You have my deepest sympathy, sir, and I hope someday you find the peace you are looking for.
You,sir, are a soldier without a war, and for you I feel so sorry. I also feel so sorry for your family. This obsession with taking the MAN down has just plain sunk to the very definition of pathetic.

I read what hossfly posted, thank you hoss fly also for digging that up,
I thought I had seen somewhere in the AMA chartered information.

So I guess they can't have voting rights in the AMA club if they are Not AMA members?

It does not seem very clear one way or the other the way its written.

Can the Associate members have voting rights in an AMA chartered club?
