"AMA" and "extreme flight" in the same sentence is almost a contradiction in meanings LOL.

That kind of press could cause AMA to appear as exciting or something... We should be careful or the sport aspect might grow too much. Before you know it, people will be flying inverted over the runway or even hovering over the runway. Those pictures need to be removed at once and a squadron of Lazy Bees posted in formation on the ground!

Although the picture of the little guy flying the heli inverted is neat, I question the safety factor of this situation.

Here we go... Me getting into another issue that I do not need to be involved with..... But this one hit too damn close......

I sometimes wonder the purpose of this so called "AMA Forum" it seems to be a vent and rant highway for people that have nothing else to do. helicopter pilots are amongst the safest pilots in the organization. This event is only 2-3 years old, but the IRCHA Jamboree is in it's 12-13 year and attracted over 500 pilots last year. There are few airplane event that even come close to this event.

DelRay: were you there this year? did you see the facilities? I doubt that the AMA will take ANY kind of risk at their OWN flying field. I am a president of a club and a CD for the heli events and I will not tolerate safety oversights.

I wouldn't question Justin's Father sense of Safety:

I saw a youngster, under direct supervision, doing great things with an RC helicopter. I was absolutely amazed. I saw a relatively long distance between the pilot and supervisor and the heli. I saw no spectators. Definitely UNLIKE the runways at local flying fields that I visit. [:'(]

What I saw was, IMO, definitely worth any risk, if any at all, that may have been involved, and I am probably the world's worst safety prude.

Here is the actual video of the activity that you are talking about, I see distance between pilot and helicopter and I see distance between the flight line and the public.

You need to also keep in mind that most of the spectators of this event have some knowledge of RC, so they are not complete ignorants of the dangers of this sport.

Even with a crash towards the end of the flight, this kid is safer than other pilots I know. ALL of them airplane pilots.

Here is another video of him at another event. Again a mishap during the flight, and the kid, and his father have complete control of the situation.

I saw him fly Friday, he did a great job, but did also stuff the ship in a low manuever that was nose vertical and going backwards, I could not even imagine doing anything like what he did. Somone told me that he actually cannot hold the sticks like we think of and he uses his palms on the sticks. He was under total control and the stuff was in a position that was in no way in a position that endangered any spectator. Heck, the guy that flew the delta wing at mach 7 was closer to the crowd that Justin.

The best part of the noon demo was the full size show of Michael Macuso and Matt Chapman, they were great.

One comment, the AMA and Futaba did a great job on the presentation of this event, the place looked great.

Not to pick nits or anything, but this was the 6th Annual FUTABA XFC. Futaba is the name sponsor and put the deal on. This was the first year that it was held at the AMA site. It was great that AMA helped support this annual contest of the best of the best in RC 3D flying!!

Hey, sorry I offended someone, but by the picture it looks to me as though they are too close to the heli. No, I wasn't there, I just mentioned the fact that I questioned the safety of that situation from what I gathered from that picture. Now, if that offended anyone, so be it, I still wouldn't want to be that close . I wasn't questioning or doubting anyone's flying capabilities. I'm still wondering how anyone can view that picture and come to the conclusion that the operators are at a safe distance from it. You were there, how far were they from the heli ?

have you ever heard of telephoto or zoom lenses for cameras? do you know what a zoom lens does to a properly composed and focused picture? It makes the illusion that objects in the background and objects in the foreground are very close to each other and sometimes they apear to be in the same plane.

this was the 6th Annual FUTABA XFC
Thanks for the correction. I beleive that the IRCHA Jamboree is in its 15-16 year also.

Now, if that offended anyone, so be it
No you did not offend me. I just have a short fuse for people like you. Coming to conclusions from ONE picture.

I'm done with this subject.

I appreciate the info on the telephoto lens and what it can do to a properly composed picture , this must be the case here. If there would have been more pitures posted I wouldn't have had to make my conclusion on just one picture. I wasn't venting and I surely wasn't ranting, I just made a conclusion from one picture.

I see. The crash was caused by the ground. Isn't that true of most crashes?[X(]

Then this photo should drive you crazy:

http://www.modelaircraft.org/gallery...&img=00081.jpg

No depth of field compression here (nor was there any in the other photo). Heli fliers tend to fly very close to themselves. Not sure why, but it seems to be the norm.

When is it scheduled on ESPN?
It'll be on the Inside RC program in late
Aug, keep an eye on the listings.

ESPN likes to stick with full scale
aircraft shows, no models.
It would be like them airing a
Pee-Wee golf tournament,
would'nt it?

The precision of the control during flying has to be seen to be believed, and at the level the guys in this contest fly, just small flaws most of us don't even notice, cost a lot of points.

I have posted two of Ido Segev's flights from XFC on my site. The ones in the VIP section are in High Definition. You will need QuickTime 7 to play them. I have also posted one of them as a smaller wmv file at the very top of the QuickTake section on the home page.

Hmmm...That video was just plane insane. I most certainly thought the Lazy Bee police would have intervened in the close up and over the runway flying and would have established a nice gentle circuit a round the pattern...What is the world coming to? Way to much excitement for me. Coin collecting, here I come.

What an excellent effeort in a video production!! Even using the basic mwv format the quality is superb. Keeps the subject in the field of view the entire time, great contrast, good use of zooms. Far better that the quality I've seen in the last couple of commercial XFC dvd's I've bought!

Thanks for the effort and keep up the high quality of your work. That doesn't even mention the ability of the video subject, Mr. Ido Segev, who is just as talented.
