Recommended Duties:

2) Act as a safety advisor and resource manager for the club and its members
3) Assist AMA in the establishment of a national safety program to reduce accidents/incidents
4) Develop, promote and encourage a climate of safety awareness within AMA clubs

Safety Coordinator activities may include the following:
• Inspect operational areas for proper signage and safety equipment as applicable.
• Distribute AMAAccident/Incident Report Forms and assure they are properly used.
• Conduct safety awareness training and related programs during club meetings.
• Conduct, at least annually, a safety audit of club facilities, equipment, and grounds to ensure
everything is in good working order and safe for normal use by members and the public.
• Act as a liaison with the local EMS/Fire Department.
• Establish a club emergency action plan to handle serious accidents/incidents.
• Coordinate appropriate first aid training for members using qualified instructors.
• Develop an appropriate communications plan to assist club officers and members.
• Review emergency procedures (fire and rescue) with club members on an annual basis.

Note: This list is provided to illustrate the range of activities a Safety Coordinator could engage in.
Authority to enforce the AMA Safety Code or any additional club safety rules should be contained in

It seems to me they went WAY out of their way to put enough disclaimers in the document. They even changed the title from officer to coordinator. I guess I am dreaming, but there should not be any confusion, as there was with 537. Somebody will pick it to pieces, though.

The Official Minutes state SAFETY OFFICER and the two terms are definitely different in the dictionary. Oh Well, AMA can do as it pleases just like the other Gestapo organizations in this country and only have to be about as accurate as 'dan rather'.

Careful there little c/s. My attitude seems to be rubbing off on you! You know I don't want to lead you astray! :)

Hi Horrace

If I understand correctly, they actually did it right. An e-mail vote was held in Nov. or Dec. changing the title from officer to coordinator. The document that appears in the charter kit was approved in an e-mail vote before the last EC meeting. I would imagine both e-mail votes will show in the offical minutes of the most recent EC meeting.

The glossary was an entirely different issue that was put forth by Bob Underwood, back when they were re-writing the safety code. The object is to have the staff and EC on the same page when answering questions about the code. I can't remember whether information on the glossary was in the published minutes back then, or in an addendum that is included when you request the minutes of the EC meetings. In all honesty, it was brought on by you when you asked about the "pyrotechnic" devices (my words, no one elses) being allowable under the safety code. You got different answers from different people. This was an effort to make sure that does not happen to anyone else.

April 2004 EC minutes:

NEW BUSINESS

Definitions and other Safety Code Ambiguities (Appendices VII, VIII)
This concept was presented by B. Underwood to J. Hager last October. There have been some instances that have come up in the last month or so which highlight Bob’s concern. As the Safety Code has grown over the years it now includes several words that have convoluted meaning or no meaning at all. There are several items in the code that can be interpreted several different ways depending on who is reading it and who is doing the interpretation. B. Underwood’s concept is to create a stand alone document for staff and council member use that can be referred to in reviewing the intent of a particular item in the Safety Code and definitions of words used in the code.
It is being proposed that a committee be formed to study the concept of developing a document that will be two-part. The first being a glossary of terms; the second would be a document that will supplement the Safety Code in much greater detail. This second part would allow the items posted in the code to remain brief and therefore less convoluted. The suggested approaches to creating these documents were reviewed. Records should be kept to retain a litany of what occurred with a particular item.

It was moved, seconded and approved by acclamation to form a document that would contain a glossary of terms used in the Safety Code, and an explanation of the intent and reasoning considered when creating a Safety Code item. This committee shall also review the wording of the current Safety Code.
Committee: B. Underwood, Chairman; D. Mathewson; R. Morgan and HQ support. (The ED will name HQ support)

From the January 2005 EC Minutes:

The following were approved by mail vote:
To amend Motion VI (February 2004): It was moved that effective with the 2005 Chartered Club Renewal, all clubs are required to name a safety coordinator or officer. This position must have access to E-mail

Ad hoc Committee on Safety Code (Appendix IV)
This is the last step in the review of the Safety Code that the committee addressed. At the October meeting the Executive Council approved the modifications to the wording of the Safety Code. The second part of the task was to create two documents that could be used by EC and staff (glossary of terms found in the code and intent of some rules found in the code). Council received these documents (via E-mail) for review prior to this meeting; Mathewson reviewed two minor changes that had been made.
Recently, a member raised an issue relative to the use of ground-based pyrotechnics. His inquiry is not addressed under the Safety Code, General item 8. This issue was referred to the Safety Committee for consideration. (See paragraph 7 of Comments to Glossary and Interpretative Documents.) The ad hoc committee further noted that Safety Code, General item 8 refers to an Air Show Advisory Committee Document but this document is not available on the AMA Web site. The ad hoc committee recommends this document be placed on the Web site in addition to being referenced in the Safety Code under SPECIALIZED SUPPLEMENTAL SAFETY CODES.
The ad hoc committee recognizes that once the flying season begins, questions will be asked relative to the changes made in the code. It is being recommended that a standing committee be appointed, however, the ad hoc committee agrees to stay in place for the remainder of this year until the President or Executive Council decides whether to create a standing committee. It may also be that any questions regarding the code will be forwarded to the Safety Committee; a policy or procedure needs to be determined.

It was moved, seconded, and approved by acclamation to accept the ad hoc Committee on Safety Code documents, titled Safety Code Glossary and AMA Safety Code Interpretation and Intent, for use by the Executive Council and AMA Staff.
