RE: BH Ryan Special 92
Just started putting mine together. Using a DLE 30 for power, I made a new firewall and relocated it about 3/8'' back from the original location. Installed the landing gear on one wing half, not as bad as I thought it would be. I did reinforce the seams with fiberglass on the wheel pants. I will need to make more clearance for the tires like others have said, just not enough movement for the oleo struts on a rough field or hard landing.

I get about the same as you. Sorry for the confusion. Should have clarified my statement. I need to open the pants up to allow the struts to move without hitting the leading edge of the pants.

I'm going to try to post some pics of mine with and without the pants. I know that they are different from yours, and I'm not trying to hijack your thread.

Has anyone purchased and flown teh larger 92 inch WS ARF. Looks good. Would like some info on actual product.

Thinking of a DLE30 but considering going electric (E-Flite 160) as a lot of my planes have been converted up to this size. Really like to keep the cowl lines clean on this one and the E-Flite 160 has given me very good flight times on 5000mha Li-po's plus it is quick and easy to get in the air.

The DLE 30 will fit inside the cowl completely concealed. The only opening I will have to add is for an extension to the muffler to remove the exhaust gasses. I did relocate the firewall to make the install easier, but I think you could install the DLE 30 without moving the firewall.

I like the side thrust protection, one of the apprehensions I have w/ the BH design which I feel would be wiped out w/ one ground loop &/or poor landing

With the DLE 30 did you have to add tail weight? I have mine to the point where I'm ready to glue the tail on, but if it needs weight back there now is the time to add it. Thanks for posting the pics, it gave me some inspiration to get my build going again. I am also using the DLE 30 in this plane. It fits the cowl like it was built for it!!

Hey Handy,
The Dle is 30 so lightweight, that you don"t have to add lead in the tail.I had to put 120 gr lead in the nose to achieve the 110mm CG.It"s still a hairy bit nose heavy at this point but I leave this way.
The factory given 100mm Cg/the wing chord is 370mm/ gives you a real nose heavy plane.Forget it.
/I"m not using the wingstruts,it"s more comfortable for me and /

Hey Georgee
Thanks for the info.I did hear the CG in the directions was wrong. Other guys that mounted other gas engines found it to be nose heavy and had to add considerable weight to the tail to balance. [:'(]

Georgee
I have put it to the side for now. Have been working on a GP Stearman with a DLE 20 for power. The Ryan is nice but it is one huge plane when it's assembled, trying to find a place to hangar it before I finish the build.

RE: BH Ryan Special 92
Did anyone change the hinges that came with the kit? I am concerned that these hinges won't hold in a quarter scale plane
like this ryan. I was going to use Robart 3/16 point hinges to be safe. Anyone have concerns? Thanks, Aframe2

Hi Aframe
Happy to see you found this thread. I was going to use the Robarts myself, but I wasn't sure hoe much wood was in the trailing/leading edge of the surfaces. I'd rather use hinge points on a gas engine anyway.

Handyman, I think there is enough wood to hold them. I had some of those nylon hinges tear into on my 1/4 scale gee bee, and replaced
them with Robarts. Might as well replace them now. I'm thinking of putting a dle-35 in this plane. What do you think? Why did you change
the firewall, do you mind me asking? Thanks, Aframe2

Aframe I moved the firewall just so I could use the stock standoffs that came with the DLE 30. If the DLE 35 is the same mounting dimensions it should be a perfect fit. You will notice the firewall angle was altered just to align the cowl/spinner orientation. Keep me up to date on your progress, she is a beautiful plane.

Handyman, wiil do, may not start on it for another month or so, I'm getting all the components I
need so I can work without delay once I start. One other question while I am thinking about it.
The instructions mention nothing about gluing the wing together. This doesn't remain a two piece
wing does it? Even if it was meant to be I think I will glue it together. Aframe2

Aframe it is designed to be a 2 piece wing, much easier to transport, a necessity with my car (HHR) Did you ever check out the link I sent you? Another plus with the DLE 30 I had mounted was that everything fit inside the cowl without a lot of cutting. I like to preserve the cowl lines on all my planes and only open them enough for cooling.

Handyman, I checked out the link, but must be doing something wrong as it won't let me log in. Must
be a trick question in there somewhere that I haven't solved. Aframe2

RE: BH Ryan Special 92
I am so disappointed in this assembly. After reading every post I could find on this
plane I have finally finished every installation, batteries, fuel tank, servos, etc. Most of
the post I read said that the balance was spot on with no need for extra weight in the
nose or the tail. Well my build turned out that I need more than two pounds of weight
in the tail, and there is no way without cannabolizing the airframe that I can get all
of this weight in the plane. I remember a post from Handyman asking about adding
weight before he glued the tail section on which would have been ideal. I trusted the
post I read and now am having this dilemma. Handyman, what would you do to balance
this plane. I will post pictures after all is said and done. It is a beautiful, but now it is
going to be a bit heavy. Please help with suggestions. Thanks, Aframe2
