While I do believe a 20cc will fly this model I don't think a 91 FS will. GP even recommends a 120FS or 25-30 cc. The advertised weight is 12.75 to 13.75 and I have not had an ARF yet that came in at the advertised weight! They all have come in a little heavier. I have an ESM Corsair that the advertised weight is 14.7 and it finished at 19 with no real extra mods. BUT like I always say, this is a hobby that we are suppose to enjoy and try new things! To each there own and we all have different ways of tackling each project! I just like to have extra power at my thumb and not need it than need it at my thumb and not have it.

I have flown the kit built fifth scale Waco YMF with a Supertigre .75 with no problem. Hell, I even flew one with a Maloney 125, and we all know how weak they were. The .91 should fly it with no problem. The problem is that we have all gotten to the point where overpowering a model is normal. It looks odd to see a Waco or Cub keeping up with a Jug or Corsair around the circuit. These planes fly on the wing, and not on the prop.

I am flying the Aeroworks Cessna 195 with dle 30 and it has plenty of power. That has a 90" wingspan so a DLE 20 would be just be fine in the Great Planes Waco.

I agree. My 16 pound H9 clipped wing Taylorcraft flies well with a G20. There's no doubt at all the GP Waco will fly very well with the DLE 20. You won't have to hack up the cowl so much either.

FWIW, I've flown the Top Flite Cessna 182 with a Magnum 91; this plane is in the 11-12lb range. I thought it would be a dog, but the 91 flew it nicely. This Waco will be slightly heavier, with a lot more drag, so the 91 might be marginal. The Cessna would loop from level flight, but was not over-powered by any stretch. We were also flying it on 30% heli fuel, so take it for what its worth...

As I have said earlier I have a DLE 30 already NIB. After reading the comments here and some of the Waco thread over in the other forum I am debating weather to order a DLE 20 when I get this WACO. While I don't want a speed demon or a 3D bird(I have plenty of both) I also don't want a plane that can't perform basic stuff and struggles to pull any maneuvers when the nose pulls up. I still believe that this Bipe will be closer to 14lbs when done. At that a 20 is going to have a lot of weight and Drag to over come. The best course of action is going to be to get it and weight all the components and the plane without engine and then see where we are!

And hey if all else fails I could order the 20 and if it works are doesn't I will one of the engines that will need a plane!! How could the wifey let an engine sit unused!!

Guys,care if I jump in? I am wanting one of these planes and have read this entire thread. I think the engine issue is also one of what sound you want along with cleanup. I love the fourstroke sound but also the price of gasoline compared to glow fuel and the lack of glowfuel on my plane. I believe if I went to gas I would choose a G26. Seems like a good compromise between a DL30 and DL20.

Not too mention, unless you are using a retract servo for throttle you can always opt to fly it at less than WOT. If it is anything like the Super Stearman you will need weight up front anyways.

Actually, the most perfect engine for the Waco is the OS 160 twin. The problem with that engine is the price. they are going for 900 bucks. With a .91 or 1.20 four stroke, you are going to need to dive to gain inertia (just like with the full scale). You wind up trading altitude for airspeed in order to do basic manuvers. But you have to do that with the full scale, or at least you had to do that with my Grandfather's YMF. The only roll was the Barrel Roll, and to loop, you had to dive (a lot). There is a lot of parasitic drag with this one, especially if you add the flying wires. I have one with the OS FT160, and another with the G-26. These are both Stickbuilt, and the one with the G-26 has been modified to the point where it is no longer the same airplane that was kitted by Pica. There is not one part that is the same as the original. Even the wing plan is scale. It is going to hit the scale at somewhere around 17 pounds (all up).

I have the 160 twin in my red one. There is ample room in the cowl with no interference problems at all. You can find photos on the YMF thread, pages 16, and 19. There are others scattered through the thread too.

Looking at Tower this AM and it looks like we are going to be waiting a little longer for the WACO. The expected delivery date has been moved from mid Feb. to late Feb. I'm not being a pessimist but it usually seems like when a disributer anounces a new product with an expected delivery time, it's not uncommon for the product to arrive later than projected. I'm like you guys, I really want to get this one going, but as they say, All good things come to those who wait. (yea, I know..that was a dumb statement) Anyway, I'll be glad...when ever it arrives. The chance of my new Waco arf arriving in February is NIL. April MAYBE. I am already resigned to the winter flying season being lost for this plane.

Our winter flying season hasn't been very good up here in St. Auggie. Either way too windy or way too cold or rain. I guessing I'll catch some flak about "winter weather" in Florida from the guys up north. Ha Ha.

Sounds like the Waco should hit the market just in time for the northerner's flying season.

As for the "winter flying" season. We have a 60+ degree weekend coming and I have a Corsair or Mustang that needs some air time! Saw where the Waco had been extended and hope that it does not continue the trend! I really want one and am slowly getting all the pieces together! Ordered a DLE 20 today to have it and the 30 so I can pick one to put in this plane!

Well, until it is available, we won't know who gets it, but I think Minnflyer wants the Waco pretty badly.

Thanks for the good words on the Shoestring review. It was a very fun plane! I have passed it on for another pilot to have fun with now.
