Leedees, Understood! I see your point. Don't worry, I wake up grumpy a few times @ 68 years. Still like playing with my toys though.

Capt Todd, Yes, the Dle 20 is a perfect engine for the Waco arf unless you want to hover. Mine flys awesome with large loops, barrel rolls, etc. Not under powered at all. Plus it is a very good fit inside the cowl. JTEC muffler originally designed by JTEC for the Arowworks Cessna 195 Dle 30 engine. I called JTEC and he made some for the Dle 20 which fit perfectly in the Waco with 2 down pipes exiting the correct place. www.jtecrc.com

Very nice, did you have to add any nose weight? Do you know how much the plane weighs? Thanks

I think I found the same exact muffler you have on towerhobbies website with a price of $129.99, but I like the way it looks on yours so I had to have one for my self. I really like the way you have everything installed a nice neat little package.

Capt Todd, No nose weight added. It weighs about 16 1/4 #. I used a 6 volt nicad 2400 stuffed forward in the nose as well as a 4 cell nicad, I believe 1 1400mah, for the engine also stuffed forward in the nose.

Thanks,

Dave, You right on that JTEC muffler, that is it. He is pretty proud of those. I paid about $120. + shipping for mine which was the first one he made for the DLE 20. I thought it was a little steep but I really liked it for my application in the waco. 1/2 the cost of the whole engine, wow. Guess it cost $$$$$ to have all this fun.

Thanks for your info....ok, you are talking about the Great Planes Waco right? It is supposed to be: Weight: 12.75 - 13.75 lb (5.78 - 6.23 kg) as per great planes. Yours is over 16 pounds? wow... How could great planes have gotten it so wrong?. Also I think it is not good that they don't specify that a dle20 or dle30 would work. My friend has a great planes super stearman with the dle30 in it and it has crazy torque on takeoff and is somewhat overpowered in my opinion. I think it would be the similar with the dle30 in this plane. Anyone else on here know what their great planes waco weighs rtf?

I have both aircraft, the Super Stearman and the WACO YMF and yes they are very much the same. I have the Saito 170R3 in the Stearman and the 200R3 in the WACO. I have never flown both on the same day because they won’t both fit in the back of my car at the same time. That being said the only difference I notice is the aileron response is sharper on the WACO but when I rebuild the WACO it will be using the connected ailerons just like the Full Scale and the Stearman.
I think Great Planes did say the DLE 30 was one of the recommended engines. The Stearman only recommends the 120 class engines but that may be because it is an older kit. Both mine came in at 14.5 pounds.

WACO YMF

Super Stearman

Hey Dave, I am sorry but I gave you my J-3 hanger 9 1/4 Cub weight. The Waco weighs 14 1/2 #'s dry. I just figured out my mistake. 2 #'s is a lot of difference.

When it is flying and it seems light and is a floater on landing. Jimm is right on on the weight on the planes, I used to have the Super Stearman also and it was in that weight range with a Saito 180 in it.

Thanks,
Eddie of OKC

Is it me or is the engine off set to one side, because it doesn't look to mount on center to the firewall. Since I am using the DLE-20 I have to make adjustments to the mounting holes since none of the ones they have marked match up to my motor mount. I even went and bought the Hanger-9 mount like the one cannonball used, and even it doesn't match up to any of the scribed marks on the firewall. any comments on the matter. The rear mounted carb and location of the fuel tank makes it a challenge to routing the throttle linkage through the firewall as well.

Cannonball (Eddie) the Throttle arm on your carb were did you acquire it from.

Thanks

I got the carb arms w/dual set screws from Chief aircraft.
I used the wood spacers in the kit to space the hanger 9 mounts to clear the cowl.
The engine is offset. The firewall is built in offset
When I get back home sun I will post pics of the setup

I would like to ask for some help. I purchased the Waco YMF-5D from Tower Hobbies in a scratch and dent sale knowing that some parts were missing. The fiber glass parts I purchased from Tower, but the wood and metal pieces used for the wing joiners I feel I can make myself. The help I would like is to have is for someone to measure and give me the top and bottom wing dihedral angles so I can verify my measurements. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

mljim,

I do not have the Waco YMF kit you have but the dihedral for both wings is 2°. The angle of incidence shopuld be about 0° for the bottom wing and 0° to -2° for the top, stab about +2-3°. There is a discusion on these items in the Waco YMF forum in Golden Age, Vintage & Antique RC http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_40...m.htm#11373889

Well so far I am about 70% complete. No big hurry to finish since there is snow on the ground and a little bit to cold to fly.

For those using the DLE20 you can purchase the Jtec compact pittsmuffler for $80 from Tower.

skylarkmk1,
Thanks for the info. I got 2 degrees for one and ~1.5 for the other, but will be double checking my work before making up the wing joiners at 2 degrees. I have them in my workshop now so I can get more accurate measurements than I had done originally.

New to gas engines in a model. Can you use the same battery split between the reciver/servos and the ignition system?
Thanks

don't take this the wrong way, but this is the wrong forum for that question. go to the gas engine forums for that kind of info. This forum is for the Waco. But since we're here....I know you are trying to save weight and money, but let me tell you...I had a brand new electronic ignition jr battery in a p47 gas plane with a brand new receiver battery and when the electronic ignition battery went bad in flight I still had control of the plane. Just something to think about and yes I know if the receiver battery had gone out it would have died but think of how much draw is coming off that battery for elect ig and receiver at the same time, that is alot of power being sucked out of that battery, I hope it doesn't get hot or something.

I have used the type of system you are asking about, and for smaller planes they are an option. For a plane as large as the Waco, a battery dedicated to the ignition does not represent a significant weight gain so feel free to use separate batteries for radio and ignition. The plane will never know it.

Thanks for the input, and I didn't think about using the engine forum. You both addressed my primary concern, and two batteries it will be.

Have any of you had the fiberglass pieces be too small that go on the landing gear up by the fuselage? Im talking about the landing gear fairings at the top of the gear, not the ones covering the wheels. Mine are way off leaving an unsightly gap between the landing gear and the fuselage. I guess ill have to call about it. I tried placing the pieces different ways to make sure i was putting each one on the correct side.

Hmm, I don't know. Just went and looked at mine and they're pretty tight. I do remember it took some fiddling to get right.
