Decathalon motor ques.
Ok i am about to purchase the Pheonix models decathalon. WS 66inch weight 7 pounds and i was woundering if a Magnum 52 4 stroke would be able to haul it around. By no means am i loooking for a 3-d machine just enough to play around. You see money is tight and if the 52 cant haul it i will have to drop to two stroke wich i don't want to do!

I'm sure there will be contradicting opinions, but I've found that most planes will fly ok when you follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Phoenix recommends a .52 four stroke. It's certainly not going to be a 3D machine, and you're going to have to rely on momentum for vertical maneuvers, but it should be a fun plane. Choose a prop that's longer and lower pitch to help pull it through the verticals.
Edit: I should also mention that if you're not in a hurry, it might help to wait for sales. I don't know where you're buying the Magnum from, but the typical price is around $150. Occasionally, Hobby People has the Magnum 70 on sale at that price. Of course if you're buying at Tower you can get the .52 for $125 right now ($150 regular price less $25 discount).

The 52 will be OK... Mine has a Saito 72, it gives better than scale power on the up lines but vertical is far from unlimited. Normal flight for me is around half throttle so figure you'll be closer to 3/4... I do have what most would consider good reserve power... not 3D yank it out power though... you'll need to "keep it on the wing" as you'll have little reserve.
If I were to do it again I'd go with the Saito 82 OR a Magnum, TT, ASP and so on 91FS.

RE: Decathalon motor ques.
Ihave the Pheonix models decathalon with a OS.91 Surpass and a 3 Blade 13x6 prop. This plane is fanfreakingtastic Iused a 120* header and a flex pipe to run the muffler to the stock muffler cutout. Just built a bracket to mount the muffler too and walla. The only thing i would recommend is a remote glow adapter. One on a switch would be the easiest playing find the glowplug on an inverted OSis fun to say the least. And i also have a Fuel Puddling issue so i dont pull the glow driver until just before takeoff to keep from flameouts. I love this bird despite the couple things i did wrong Ohh and the best part. NOCOWLCUTTING!!! Just one hole for glow plug and one hole for needle.

I know this is a 8 year old post but yeah .52 fur stroke is the highest four stroke Phoenix calls for but I went with a .61 four stroke ASp Fs61AR Because the .61 is 5 grams lighter than the .52 so that gave me a little extra power

Wow, didn't realize this was such an old thread when I read the OP's question. Anyway, I had this plane with an OS46 FXi; it was probably slightly better than "scale" power. Swapped it out for a .53 2 stroke; quite a bit better power. I also have direct experience with the OP's combo question: my buddy has the same plane with a TT .52 4 stroke. It was a dog at our elevation(5000'). Tried several different props, with a 12x4 Xoar woody being the best pull. Even then, the only way to get a loop was with a shallow dive and full throttle: would barely make it over the top of the loop without stalling/falling out. Majority of a flight was at full throttle. A .70-.91 4 stroke would be a MUCH better choice

I am putting together a Seagull Decathlon with pretty much the same specs as yours and i am using a Magnum 91, it should be a fun plane.
