TBM Goldwing RC YAK55M 30cc ARF Build
For anyone with an interest, Bill and I from Troy Built Modelsare doing a build on a 30cc Yak55M from Goldwing:http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items...-030V3BAF.html. We will be doing a few different builds in the future also covering some ESM planes too. This will be just a quick build/review hitting on each step.
From the start the plane look great right out of the box: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46WSHOOWJa8
The only thing that was a bit different was the fact that we will be glueing in the Stab for the elevators. Most planes come with a bolt on Stab, we found this to be no problem. On the Goldwing planes larger than 30cc they do come with a bolt on Stab.

Yep,I agree on the price change.Glad I bought the Yak55M 30cc when I did in Febuary. I really like the plane but I would not pay the new price and shipping for it. IMHO puts me back in the 50cc size.

RE: TBM Goldwing RC YAK55M 30cc ARF Build
Hello All,
This is Bill, Customer Service for TBM. I am sure I have spoken to many of you over the phone, and I look forwards to speaking to those of you I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet.
I see the primary concern in this thread is regarding the pricing of the kits. We are finding that the pricing is varying wildly on these kits, from some retailers selling them as low as cost for the kits in an attempt to liquidate their inventory. Some of the reasons we are finding for this is some retailers still have older, version 2 kits. The version 2 kits are most easily distinguished by their aluminum landing gear versus the current supplied landing gear.
Other companies are lowering their prices to attempt to combat with the other companies low pricing. That being said, I am more than willing to look at an advertised deal, and attempt to match the price for you. So, if there are any pricing concerns, give me a call first and see what I can do for you. We are running combos on the planes and engines as well. The one thing we have noticed, is many companies are finding it hard to support these planes, and do not have replacement parts on hand. I am not saying we have every part on hand, but we are working with goldwing to ensure we can support these planes like we have done for many other manufacturers in the past. Its a long process, but we are working on it so you can keep these planes in the air as long as possible.
lrglnman , As for the servos we used in the plane we decided to build the plane with our new MKS DS 1210 servos, and we have been quite happy with them. If you decide to do a "2 tail servo" setup, we urge you to plan your weight out ahead of time. Even though the servo does not weight much, having that additional weight out on such a long moment like the tail on this airframe, can make balancing the airplane a bit more difficult, however with proper planning, there is no issue, or you can build the airframe with 1 tail servo with no problems. We were planning on thrashing this airplane a bit, so we wanted the additional benefits of 2 elevator servos. We will post additional photos very soon, where you will see eventually how we mounted the ignition, but in order to get more weight to the front, to combat the second elevator servo, we mounted the ignition to the side of the motor box.

Now keep in mind I bought the yak 54 . Are these 2 planes very similar? If i was to do the 1 servo set up for the elevators how would i go about doing it? and would the MKS DS 1210 be plenty to handle the elevator load? Also , what prop are you going to start with? This is going to be my first real 3d gas plane so I dont want to get anything wrong. I also received the bec for the ignition. what battery are you planning to use?

I've been looking at the GW planes since this thread was started, and I've looked at the TBM website and have seen the videos, I'm wondering if these 30cc planes will fly okay with a Zenoah G26ei? The DLE engines seem to really yank them off the ground and look like their haulin' A**.... I'm more interested, too, in aerobatics than 3D.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the questions and for following along with us. For the best price on a combo deal please call as the price may change from plane and engine choice.
Irglnman, Not sure about the prop at this time as for the elevator and 3-D flying I would recommend using 2 servos. Maybe for sport flying 1 servo would be fine but for 3-D I like to go with 2 for good control, also if you happen to lose 1 servo you would still have a good chance of getting your plane back in one piece.
Aerobatx, I would think the 26cc engine would do fine. I was flying a 73" EX 260 with a JC28cc engine and it was ok, like you said not the power of the DLE but it was fine. I had a lot of fun with that plane.
We've also completed a few more steps on the Yak and will be posting before the end of the day.

Ok we are ready for the next step. I do have to say we are not following any order, just what we feel we have time for.
Next was attaching the rudder, elevator and installing the servos with linkages. Everything was pretty sraight forward, we used all included hard ware. The extensions for the elevator we used are 18" , two one for each servo. We also got the aileron servos installed using the supplied hardware. The servo wire once installed in the wing was long enough to make it outside the wing allow us to use a 12" Y - extension pluged into the receiver.
The servos we used are the MKS DS-1210's:http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/MKS-DS1210.html

I will mosty likely go with 2 servos on the elevators. Those servo arms sure look nice, may have to see about picking up a set. real interested in those servos as well.

Zippi,
The servo arms are included with the Plane. We do sell Aluminum servo arms by MPI, SWB and Air Wild. I thought it was a nice touch that they're included with the plane, one less thing to purchase!
Example:

Next will be the Engine, Switches, Throttle Servo and Regulator.
We found the stand offs included with the engine to be about 1/4 inch too short. You could use some washers to make up the difference, we used some longer stand offs. Other than that no problem with the engine install. For the Ignition location right on the engine box worked great. We will also be using a hand operated choke and one of our TBM Carb Arms for the throttle lever.

The stock stand-off's will work but they will put the prop close to the cowl. Just a couple of flat washers will space it out far enough. I just said 1/4 inch because it was easy, not much extra space needed.

One thing I did want to talk about was the throttle servo and placement. I mount most of my throttle servos on a piece of angle aluminum and bolt it in the motor box. If you go back to post #20 you can see the linkage and how it is mounted a bit better from the front of the plane also.

Next was the battery placement, I was trying to make sure I kept as much weight foward as I could. The reciever battery is on the bottom and the ignition battery is on the top of the motor box.

One of the questions I had was on switch placement. There is not much wood on the side of the fuse, but there is enough. One switch on each side including the fuel dot.
