I took pics and my wife tried to load them into my computer but it would not work for us so she said that she would try again after work .. When I did my cowl I just sort of scaled from the pics that I could see on line and followed them ..I am using the stock muffler ...You will lose most of the oil filter or what ever that thing is..

This plane does look nice. I'm looking for a plane for next year to use with my Saito 1.5 and I can't decide between the PA-18, Taylorcraft and 1/4 scale cub.

Yup,thats exactly how mine ended up.

I can't freelance too much since this is a review plane but I did a couple of things to add some flavor. I'll post pics later today or when I get back from Nall.

The first one was to take some kids flashlights and make reflectors for the landing lights (hardly an original idea but it came out looking nice)

The other, I reviewed an RTL fasteners assortment that had a million of these little dinky screws I figured I'd never use. I ran one into each of the 4 corners of each of the instruments on the panel where they tried to simulate the mounting screws with the little laser cut hole. It came out looking pretty good.

I also left the rubber ducky on the pilot since this Cub will be spending the majority of its time on the water.

We have the same ideas , I have some #0 x 1/8" screws that I got from Micro Fasteners and I did the same thing .. It does look pretty good . I reworked the landing light area too but I just used tin foil and cut a backing plate from a book I found in the dumpster...Not as hitec as a flashlite but better than what came with the kit ..My pilot is Buzz lightyear...I am looking forward to seeing your pics..

With a little cleaning w/ light sandpaper (took about 90 secs) mine work just fine.

You must have received a bad set . Check to see if the sheath is pinched at the end, Sometimes when they cut them they will pinch shut a little and you need to open it up.. I have a tiny rat tail file I use for that...

Hi Folks,
Well the RC Bug has bitten me again, and this time it may be Fatal!!! I have been following this thread with great interest, as I have just purchased The Hanger 9 PA-18 Super Cub, the Cessna 182 and the Taylorcraft.
My background is in 60 size Heli's (10 of them), and smaller 40 size Planes. I am assembling the needed parts and pieces to put these birds together, and have a few concerns and/or questions.
So far this is what I have:
Radio: Futaba T14SG

Reciever: Futaba R7008SB x 3

Servo's: Futaba S3071HV x 19 ( control surfaces), Futaba S3072HV x 3 (Throttle)

Engine: OS FT-160 Twin (Super Cub and Taylocraft) , OS FF-320 (Cessna 182)

On Board Glow: Sonic Tronics, Twin cylinder x 2, and 1 Four Cylinder set up

Light kit for Super Cub: Undecided

Flight Batteries: Undecided

Switches: Undecided
Light Kit : RC Lights Kit with seperate Battery for power. ( Cheaper LiFe from Value Hobbies)

For Batteries, I am thinking of the A123 2500Mah that Hangtime Hobbies sells for Reciever and servo power, either one or two Batteries per Plane, Seperate Battery for On Board Glow ( cheaper LiFe from Value Hobbies)

Switches: 2 HD Switches ( Pin or Slider ) per Plane, with 2 Leads to Reciever for power, either from 1 Battery or maybe 2 if you think it's needed

Now that we got the background out of the way, Here are my Questions:

Seeing as I am running 8 Digital High Voltage, High Torque (139 ozin at 6.6 Volts) servo's, Do I need to use a power expander? Or will the buss bar in the Reciever take that kind of load with 2 Power Leads going in? I don't want to risk a brown out or failsafe condition , or worse yet, Fry the Reciever.

Also would like some input on the size of battery I should use for the On Board Glow, and if Sonic Tronics Glow Driver can operate on 6.6 LiFe Batteries.
Thanks in advance
Fly RC174

You dont need a power expander with this plane.

If you want bad ass lights, get E-Z lights from East Coast Scale Helicopters.

I know some guys have gone to o-rings instead of rubber bands, but for those who did stick with the stock kit: Do you find that the 4 bands when installed provide enough stiffness to the gear? Now that I've got most of the components on, it seems that the gear is too flimsy. Especially if you first touch down on one wheel, seems like it will just collapse. Any advice appreciated.

I am using stock rubber band and they work just fine. You will need 4 rubber bands. I made few take off and landings the other day and the gear worked great!

I find the rubber bands work fine but when they eventually do need to be replaced try using 1/8" shock cord . It will last almost forever and works great.. You will need about 16 inches per side...

Thanks Barracudahockey,

I looked at the Light Kit from East Coast Vario. Two of my friends have them on scale Heli's, and they are supper brite.
I just was not sure if I could turn on the Nav Lights with one channel, and then turn on the Landing Lights with another channel.
I know I can do that with the controller from RC Lights, but not sure about the controller from East Coast.
Another plus with the East Coast set is they are reasonably priced.

You will need another controller to do that . I bought one and set mine up so that my landing lights come on with the flaps..I think a completely different light system would be better.. These lights aren't all that bright and you can get much better light systems.. Mind you they do cost a few bucks...

Only the landing lights are switched on the EZ controller.

Well, mine's all done. Finally. Recommended receiver batt, Spectrum AR7010 receiver, JR Sport 126MG servos all 'round, Eflite 110 motor, Castle ICE 110 ESC and 2 (total of 4) 5000mAh etc batteries for power, DuBro 1/3 Scale Cub wheels, custom "N" numbers (N66KDT) and a little black paint on cowl and flat black on the top of the dash. Took 4.5oz on top of motor box to balance at 4 inches back from leading edge; nose just slightly low.
A couple of electronic glitches. Initially I couldn't get the motor to work, and after a few calls to Horizon and to Castle, I wound up sending the ESC back to Castle. They checked it out and said no problem noted but when I got it back and reinstalled it, everything worked fine. Great service and calls w/ both Horizon and Castle. We walked through everything on the phone re hookups, operation and diagnostics. Thanks to both. Then the receiver decided it'd unbind itself a couple of times, but finally got that fixed.
Maiden awaits; supposed to stop raining here tomorrow but be really windy for the next couple of days. Hope to get it in the air this weekend, but we'll see....

bikerbc;
which lite set did you get, that you said were not that bright.
I was thinking that maybe I could get the controller from RC Lights, and then buy the LEDs from East Coast, to make up my own system.
That is if they are compatable. The controller from RC Lights already has the resistors built into the controller. you can operate it on 4.8 volts up to 7.4 volts, and if fully programable.
I would think that LEDs from another source would work with it.
I would really like to be able to put the lights on a three position switch. 1 OFF, 2 Nav Lights, 3 Nav Lights and Landing Lights
Any thoughts?

The lite set that comes with the PA18 is not that brite ..Maybe higher voltage would be brighter , I don't know much about it.I think its the LED's themselves though that are either extra bright or not.. I have that little Tactic Beaver and it has a lite set that is really brite , you can easily see it in the day lite.......Shock cord is like the stuff that is in the inside of tent pegs.. You can Google it... In Canada Hardware stores carry it..I am not sure where you get it in the states but its cheap and not hard to find.. maybe Dress shops ??
