Cub flight video at the Flying Mustangs field in Billings
I took a video of the flight with my Super Cub at the Flying Mustangs Field in Billings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbDsIjyENes&feature=player_detailpage I clipped some or it would have been much longer. Plenty long anyway...

Well, it's been a great airplane to fly, and it looks really good on the ground. I think it may be time to make a decision here on my ASP FT160AR flat twin four stroke running on glow fuel. It's been running horrible, and I've never gotten more than 7000rpm out of it, ever. More like 6000. I just bought an O.S. carbeurator for it, hoping that the ASP one was just a hunk of metallic junk and that the new, higher quality carb will allow this engine to run better. If this doesn't do the trick I'll be buying another VVRC 40 like the one that's in my 30cc Beaver. Ugh. I hate screwing around with stubborn engines. I just wanna fly now! Besides, that ASP doesn't really sound very good with the exhaust extensions on there- maybe I should put some mufflers on them to create a little back pressure to help this thing run better? The bottom of my fuselage is always dripping with oil after a flight, no matter how lean I try to run this engine. I think the carb is just junk as far as the needle seats are concerned. It's either rich or lean, with almost no sweet spot on the high speed needle. Low speed should be set well- it idles at 1700 or less, and transitions without stumbling or stalling out, so rich/lean isn't an issue with the low speed needle. I'm just confused about why this thing won't run right.

According to me? Never. That's why I might put one in this Super Cub! I've been running one in the 30cc Beaver and love it. The ASP FT160AR that I mentioned in the second sentence has been a less than stellar performer, as I said, and doesn't seem to run well no matter how the needles are set. It is a stubborn engine.

Pretty sure that monstrosity from DLE includes straight-drilled plug ports, not angled like the venerable VVRC 40. Also, that 180mm width does NOT include plugs, so figure on adding roughly an inch and a half to that 7.1" width, once you get plugs and boots on both sides. Not as well planned out of a platform as the VVRC 40, but it does have a bit shorter snout, which might make it a better fit in certain cowls.

Thanks!
I wasn't certain if the posted dimensions included the other bits and if not, how much they would add. I don't think 8.5" would fit.
Sadly, the VVRC 40 is a $100 premium over the DLE 40 for us in WA State with local taxes & shipping, so I was considering the DLE as a replacement for my current EP setup.
Cheers

Though it didnt happen till it got pretty hot out there (remember the review was done in March/April), I did start getting some heating issues which was solved by installing baffles, it runs fine now even in the high 90's.
I keep fully intending to put the floats back on but its just so much fun to fly on wheels that I dont want to relegate it to once every other month like the Beaver gets.

Agree - clean cowl is a must have.
My original question is/was does anyone have the DLE 40 installed? At 7.1" width, it appeared to fit, but then learned that does not include plugs and boots. For the record, marketing engine width without total included width is flat out misleading. DLE should change that.
Guess I'm buying new batteries instead of swapping the electric motor for a gas engine.
Cheers

Ugh- now my McDaniels onboard glow driver doesn't work. I've tried everything. It just failed. No crashes, no shock, mounted on foam, good battery, brand new glow plugs, etc. Just won't heat my plugs. Had to pull the cowl to put regular glow drivers on the twin to get it started. Contacted SonicTronics to see what they have to say about it. All connections are tight and secure, never gotten wet, etc. Just simply stopped working. LED flashes rapidly and the unit makes a very quiet but audible ring sound when activated. Frustrating.
