Default skis

Just an update on the skis if anyone else is building them. I had one crack at the top of the pine when i flexed the landing gear... i have modified them now to have aluminum sub frames, keeps the skis more in track as well as way stronger... i think they even look a little better!

HELI-MECH, have you flown with the skis yet? I've yet to fly mine, the winds have not been good and we get snow and then lose it before the weather will cooperate.

i haven't flown it yet and after testing them today on taxi I decided I want to put keels on them for sure... You can see how it's slipping

ps: how do I post video

I'm not sure what the lift coefficient of your wing tubes is but I think you will have to go a lot faster than that to attain flight.
I was thinking of running a bead of JB Weld down the center of my skis for a keel and then with a flat file make a sharp edge
so that it will track and not slide sideways.

that 40cc twin has a lot of power but i'm thinking your right... i think i'll try that JB weld as well... i cant really think of anything else, i could bend a small piece of aluminum but i think it would end up to protruded...

I am considering a replaceable mini-keel on the CF skis to avoid steering issues like slipping, skidding, and other unintended excursions into the arena of uncontrolled taxiing. Replaceable keels could be either aluminum or CF. What are your preferences?

I would say aluminum... If for some reason you are on rougher terrain and not just ice and snow you would hate to wear through the carbon fibre...

But if you wear through the CF piece, it is replaceable... Ok, aluminum is easy.

Default skegs keels carbides on the skis

Installed the skegs today in the bottom of skis. Simple method and seems like it will work well, its a bent piece of stainless steel welding rod (bent at both ends at 90 degrees), two small holes smaller than the diameter of the rod and then hammered in place. THey would be falling out, they seem to be in there nice and tight. Could have epoxied them in but didnt see the need.

Looks like the carbide runners I used on my snow mobiles back in the day. (the day when I was young and could tolerate the cold!)

those look like they should work, good idea and a lot easier than JB Weld, I have lots of SS welding rod so I will do the same thing

Yeah, make them whatever length as well... i figured the smaller is better, more weight pushing on a smaller carbide to bite into any ice that may be the issue. Like barracuda mentioned, just like a ski-doo carbide.

Hi to all you !
new kid in town here and wonder what is the ultimate engine on the Hangar 9 Super CUB. I am typically slow flyer, maybe once a month on a sunny sunday or so. My egninge should be easy to use and keep for many years. Gas or Glow ? 2 stroke or 4 stroke ? Twin or singel ? Thanks for your feedback.

My best experience with the Super Cub is with the twin OS 160. It is the best all round glo engine in RC, IMO. Sounds great, looks good, runs smooth, plenty of power. Look at the Dave Patrick Super cub thread, you will see a lot of good ideas and pictures. The H9 Cub is a clone of theDP cib

Agreed. I'm running the cheap version of this engine in mine- the ASP FT160AR which you can buy from Hobby King (I know, I know...) for $358 instead of the O.S. price tag of $969 from Tower. I have gallons and gallons through my ASP and it hauls my Super Cub around quite well. Our club field is at 5,600' ASL so the altitude decreases hp and this engine turns an 18x6 prop at 8000+ rpm all day long. And is sounds great. I usually only need half throttle to fly around and that's where it sounds really good.

Jeepindog
I have seen the OS 160 used for sale on RCU for as little as $400 asking price. Seems like everybody is abandoning Glo and dumping their engines. For the smaller sizes, I would rather pay the $18 for glo fuel and avoid the problems with gas engines....smell, noise, weight, carb tuning problems, mechanical complexity, etc, etc. I think the upper limit for glo is around 1.8 cu in, after that, the gas engines are more appropriate. But every body has their own likes and dislikes and own opinions, we can suit ourselves and have fun.
By the way, any body flying at the Cherry Creek Park field over the holidays? I will be visiting my son in Greenwood Village on Dec 30 for a few days, would like to stop by.

I'm running a Saito 4S 1.8 side mounted. If your inclined to glow than go with an OS 1.6FX. Last choice would be a 20cc to 26cc gas engine mounted inverted. I had the standard H9 Cub powered by a 20cc gasoline engine and it had more than enough power.

I thought everybody was going to the VVRC40 twin gas engine in the Super Cubs . I had a G26 in my first one and was not happy with it at all .

Mine flew ok on a 26, nothing spectacular. I suspect the 33 would be a good fit, the 40 is fun but stupid power.

This is for machining the mold to make the skis. Keels will be smaller, plan to be replaceable later. This is Gen 1. 18.5" x 5" wide, modeled after the Airglass GLH-3000. Thoughts?
