ORIGINAL: Texastbird

Flying season is here!!!! Hint, hint.
Isn't it year 'round in Texas?

I got the port wing flying wires completed today.

The full size FB has more flying wires than the model has. I am considering trying to set them up. They go from the underside of the wings to the wheels.

Other than that, it's time to finish up the engine peripherals such as glow plug wiring harness, throttle cable hookup, third fuel line, etc.

I'm having issues with my Velcro pieces staying stuck to the balsa wood. Even though I hardened the patch area with either CA or epoxy. Any suggestions for a good adhesive I can apply with a brush or something to make the Velcro patches stay stuck down?

I've used some stuff I got from the "dollar" store called Seal ALL. Its sort of like a thin shoe goo type stuff. I don't know if it is any better than the CA.
It mostly flying season year round on the upper Gulf Coast except for when monsoon season decides to flood the flying fields for a week or so. [8D]

Thanks T-T! I am going to go look for it at my local 99.999999999999999999999 cent store tomorrow!

T-T, man you got a really good deal on that SealAll stuff. I went to the 99 cent store looking for it but they did not have any. So later I shopped around online to find it and saw it's $9 bucks a tube normally.

Wow, its not worth that much! There's nothing magic in the tube, ha, ha. Maybe they can't sell it in California because it gives laboratory rats cancer if they smoke it or something.

lol

I have some Shoo Goo, but it's reaaaaalllllllyyyyyyyyy thick stuff. I use it to fix shoes, of all things.

I just saw some Zap-A-Dap Goo. Not too expensive, maybe I will try a tube of it.

Strange thing about the covering on this model...

I wanted to take some posed photos so I moved the plane out of my house to the backyard. When going from the cool of the house to the warmth of outside the covering immediately sagged. Like in a couple of minutes. Even though the plane was in the shade.

I placed the model out into the sunlight and after awhile the covering started to tighten up again if it was in the sunlight. The sides of the fuselage remained saggy. After I took photos I moved the plane back into the shade. A little while later I looked at it again and even the sides had tightened up again. All the covering was once again taut.

I have never seen a covering react like this one before.

Well, I never did get around to an lhs to find some Zap-A-Doo Goo so I just decided to use regular Shoo Goo. Sure hope the velcro decides to stay stuck in place this time. [:@]

In other news, I had an issue with connecting my harnesses for my telemetry to the airspeed pitot. I used a Spektrum extension inside the wing and thought I was okay. But the extension is male-female. I also have an extension from the telemetry module to just outside the fuselage. It also terminates with a female end. So I needed a male-male connector and Spektrum does not offer one. I could have bought another short Spektrum extension for $10 bucks and cut off the male end and spliced it to the existing extension in the wing, for example. But I asked a friend of mine who is into electronics if he could identify what plug is used and he did. So then I shopped on eBay and found a pack of 10 connectors with pigtails and matching plugs, for $5.95 shipped from China. I got them in exactly one week from ordering. Today I made a male-male adapter so problem solved.

Yay! The Shoo Goo worked! Stupid velcro pieces are good and 'stuck' now. Thanks again for the tip Tex!

I'm glad you are progressing so well on this build. Too bad about the covering. I haven't seen a VQ in awhile. I had hoped they upgraded the covering material, but I guess they haven't.

Okay, it's time to get the final details worked out. I needed to install the engine mount using locknuts on the inside. I knew it was going to be difficult, and it turned out to be a major PITA.

But first, I wanted to put a little shine back on the engine and mount. It has gotten dulled out with all the handling.

Two of the screws butted up against rails that support the fuel tank and also glow driver battery. I had already installed the plate and battery, which now had to be removed to get access to the screws. And further, the rails had to be notched out to make room for the nuts. So I went digging with an Xacto knife. Trying to fit my fat hand, Xacto knife, and flashlight all in that little space was tough! And trying to see it clearly with my crappy eyesight was not much better. I had a cheap pair of 99 Cent Store reading glasses on to help.

After notching the rails, I had to install the nuts 'by feel', using one fingertip, while turning the screw outside with an Allen wrench. Once the nuts were started, I was able to use an 8mm ignition wrench to hold them while I turned the Allen key 1/3 revolution at a time. Tedious, slow, and awkward. But it got done.

The two top nuts were cake. I was able to use a 8mm deep socket and extensions. The bottom nut again required the 8mm spanner.

Last time I went to the 99 Cent Store for 'readers' I bought five pair and like you have them all over the place.

I got the tray for the fuel tank re-installed today. Then I re-installed the glow driver battery, and fixed the fuel tank into place. It is a fairly tight squeeze-fit as is but I also used a piece of double sided tape. Because the VQ factory drilled the hole in the firewall for the fuel tank, too large, I will need to pack some wadding around the neck of the tank. I also got the carb control rod sheath glued into place.

All for now.

Today I installed my Rx switch into the cockpit. I will use a servo extension wire to connect it to the power panel.

I also needed to position the glow driver telltale LED and I found myself in a bit of a quandry. I really wanted to place it inside the cockpit, but that would mean I would have to walk around the wing to look at the IP every time I needed to see it. I really did not want to stick it on the side of the fuselage.

But, logic won out and I placed it on the side of the fuselage. I also placed it on the side that will be closest to me when flying so that I can see it more easily when the plane is in the air. We typically fly a CCW pattern at my field.

Since I finally got around to install the Rx switch, it was now okay to permanently stick down the pilot. I used some double sided tape and also a bolt. Then I CA'd around the bolt so it won't back out.

Last Sunday I maidened my Fly Baby - FG-30 Gas Saito, lots of power, three bladed prop.

Well, right after takeoff, the plane banked sharply left; I corrected, took her up and then trimmed out with FULL right aileron trim, and half right rudder trim. Wow, managed to get it down safely to check things out.

Turns out that my right wingtip had a 3 degree warp up - made measurements with an incidence meter. Wing roots were the same and the left wingtip was also fine. Right wingtip was up by three degrees compared to the root and the other wingtip.

I have now straightened out the right wing as much as possible and will try her again this coming weekend.

Just a headsup to ensure your wingtip is not warped like mine.

Plane looks great up there. Covering is a pain - as soon as it sees any heat, it wrinkles. Back in the shade, it tightens up.

Love the size and paint scheme.

Did you ever get a chance to fly it yet? Wondering how the radial is working out on the Baby.

Sorry Tex, the answer is no. Things came up, priorities changed, and the Fly Baby is in storage until an as yet undetermined date.

Back from the black hole. After having put it up due to a death in the family and relatives coming over from around the country, it just got way way on the back burner and lots of other projects came along. But this past week I brought it out of storage. The VQ Fly Baby project has been re-started. Making slow progress, re-programming a new Tx and so everything takes time. Got the engine mounted, got the telemetry working (except for the stupid airspeed sensor, aarrgghh!!)

Just when I thought I could work away on this, my dog injures her leg and so that will be creating some delays in the progress while I take her to vet appt's and do physical therapy with her. At the present time, I am hoping to get the engine running, now that it is mounted onto the airframe.

Hey Kostas! Yeah, will do. Well I have an update about the telemetry airspeed. Seems I had the wrong cable for it, and how I do not know. I only recall getting the sensor 6 years ago and putting it into the wing and using what I thought was the cable it came with. ANyway, now that it was pointed out to me by Spektrum, I have the correct cable on order.

I also attached a needle valve extension and a choke plate extension. I had to make them new, today. I had really nice ones before when I used to run this engine on my test stand but I could not find them and I looked everywhere I thought they might be.

Since the engine is in the airframe and not on my test stand, the next thing I have to do is make some restraints to hold this large airplane when I start the engine.

I was doing some simple checking of CG balance while still in the early stages of this model. The engine I chose is much heavier than the suggested engines.

The suggested engines are 20-30cc and looking online I see the 30cc have an average weight of about 2.5 lbs. The radial I have mounted weighs 6.2 lbs. I am going to have to add counterweight towards the rear of the plane.

I believe that the amount of weight necessary will depend on the distance from the CG point. The further back I can mount it, the less weight will be required. This is going to pose a problem for me, I can already sense that.

Well, it will have to be figured out, and a method to attach some weight devised. Name: popcorn.gif
