RE: World Models Super Chipmunk 90
Ouch ! That's discouraging and very damaging to the pocket book.
I've repaired the damage to the flight surfaces and she's read for another flight ....or should I say attempt.
Winds are pretty high today so, I'll wait for a better day later in the week.
All of these bumps and scrapes are taking their toll on the fiberglass fuselage. Looks like I have some reinforcement to do in the weakened areas. I plan to use very light FG cloth on the inside for those areas that Ican reach and keep the resin application as thin as possible without compromising strength. It's going to add weight no matter what Ido but, the engine should handle it up to a point.
I still haven't tried the 18x10 prop which I hope will give it more pull. This little G38 is strong and turns high RPM with the 18x8. It flies the plane well but, I'd like to see if Ican get a bit more speed.

Hey ya'll,
I've had many trials and tribulations with my GP Chipmunk .120 but, I think I've got things worked out pretty well now. I had a heck of a time keeping the gear under it and have repaired/rebuilt that area 4 times ...4th time was the charm. I found and repaired a couple of questionable spots in the CDI wiring, installed a new spark plug, and mounted a different prop. I'm now using an 18x10 prop and have hit the sweet spot with this engine/airframe combo. This is the prop for this bird. More power and torque and it no longer sounds like it's over-revving. I flew it Monday (11/11) and it was great. It still needs a bit of trim tweaking but, it's close as is. She's a bit nose heavy and I may remove the starter spring from the engine and see if that will make it balance like I want it. It's unnecessary weight anyway.
Mr Chips is flying great and I'm a happy pilot.

FYI ....for those of you interested in Senior Pattern Association contest flying, I've recently discovered that the World Models Super Chipmunk is legal for SPA providing the engine requirements are met (ie. not to exceed .65 two stroke or .95 four stroke). There are a few other Super Chipmunk ARFs that are eligible with the right engine. This is a fairly easy way to have some contest fun without breaking the bank.

I thought I would post my experiences with the Goldberg and WM Chipmunks. My first was purchased at a garage sale for $25. I finished learning to fly on that. I then built the kit and flew for a couple of years with a cantankerous K&B 65.
My current Chipmunk is a WM that was purchased in 1999 and powered with a YS 120. Talk about overpowered!
In 2006, I put it her on a diet, removed both the rear elevator servos and set up a pull-pull on the rudder. I also removed the flap servo and re-engined it with a TT91 four-stroke. I miss the power, but it really flies much better now that it is almost 2lbs lighter. I learned to fly rolling circles with her and still fly her today at age 15!
I slowly moved the CG back until knife-edge flight quits pulling to the canopy. It now will knife-edge with zero coupling the length of the flying field.
It won't hover with the 91, but it does a spectacular Blender. Get nice and high, hammer-head then apply full aileron. At the desired altitude, move the sticks to an outside snap and watch it immediately stop descending and spin around the cg. Make sure your battery is secure!!
I should probably purchase another Chipmunk while they are still available. In my opinion, it is the best sport\scale aerobatic plane ever!
