Default Converting a Great Planes Super Sportster 40 to Electric

I have an old Super Sportster 40 built from a kit, powered by an OS 40 two stroke engine. I'd like to convert it to a brushless electric motor. I know very little about electric, so can anyone suggest what motor, speed control, and battery I should use?

Thanks

I have run a couple of .40 size planes with a GP 42-60-800kv motor, 80 amp esc , 4000-5000 mah 4s lipo 25c or better, on a regular MA 12x8 3 blade propellor.

I would say the plane would be around 6-7 pounds so a Power 46 style motor with a 60 amp (or higher) ESC and a 5 cell battery (3800-4200).
You may have to build a motor box or use an adjustable motor mount. You will also have to figure out a good place to mount the battery considering CG and make a hatch for easy access.
Here is a site with some good information and pricing:

Great motor to power a .40~.46 plane. I mounted mine on a 4.5 pound Kaos 40 with a 11x7 it has unlimited vertical, too much for a 70's .40 pattern type plane, so I did some test using my Kaos with 4000 mah battery: MA 11x7, 55.3 amps, 834 watts, unlimited vertical 6.5 minutes. APC 10x7, 11200 rpm, 48 amps, 739 watts, great power 7.5 minutes. APC 9x9, 11100 rpm, 48.3 amps, 741 watts, great speed 7.5 minutes. APC 9x6, 12500 rpm, 34.3 amps, 540 watts, great speed 8.5 minutes, flies about like a 70's .40 powered plane really flew. My friend recommended this to me, he uses his on .40 size trainer for fun flies.

This is the speed controller I used. http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...dProduct=12189

If you want sport power where it flies around nice and easy just loops rolls and stuff. This will give about 5 1/2 pounds of thrust with a 12X6 prop. Going to a 13X6 prop is over 6 pounds of thrust.

I've used the nylon spacers available from Home Depot (in their hardware drawers) as standoffs for mounting motors on factory supplied firewalls. You can also get 60mm long aluminum standoffs from Hobbyking. (Item 201000003) These are all so much easier to deal with than the adustables. On 46 size motors, I just use long woodscrews to go right through the "star" mount and the standoff into the firewall. I do, however, mix up some epoxy with a healthy dose of milled fiberglass and coat the end of threads with that before final installation.

The Turnigy G46-670 on 5S with an 11x7 3 blade master airscrew prop is great for 5-6 pound airplanes. I use a CC 50A ESC with mine on Laddie Mikulasko's Arrow.

Fabru, I have converted a few old airplanes to electric in this size airframe... and I will recommend moving the firewall forward as far as you can, then making a battery access hatch on top where the gas tank was. The new area behind the firewall will help with battery storage and balance. You will PROBABLY also find that moving the servos forward is going to REALLY help balance the plane also. Most of these older designs end up being WAY tail heavy after converting to electric if you don't cut weight in the back of the plane. At first i was surprised by it,but now I expect it.

Thanks for the info Foodstick. I'll take a look to see if moving the firewall is an option on this air frame.

I like to use the type of motors where the back of the outrunner bolts right to the firewall with an X shaped aluminum mount. That way it makes for the most room for the battery hatch. Get that weight out front !

Here is how i do it, cheap and easy.

10-32 threaded rod
10-32 nyloks
10-32 hex nuts
fender washers
Pex tubing

I picked it up at Lowes.
