Great Planes Citabria
Hey Guys,
I saw the new Great Planes Citabria at Joe Nall yesterday. I'm really
trying to stay from the arf's but this one's got me thinking. This is
a really sharp looking plane.

I was under the impression Citabrias had Clark YH airfoils, this is more like a Decathlon with flaps! pretty sure its based on the Dynaflite Decathlon (very similar construction)

Hey Guys;
I just place one on back-order with Tower Hobbies!! I have a new DLE 35RA that will go in the nose!! Here is the video from Great Plane website of it in the air!!
http://www.greatplanes.com/airplanes/gpma1435.html
I down load the manual and it looks like a sweet build for next winter.
Over all, I do love the plane and I can not wait to see if it fly like the full scale one. I have over 50 hours in one and it was a blast to fly!!

I'm in also.
Citabria that flys like a Decathlon, what more could you ask for. I'm also planing to get one and planing to use a DLE 35RE as the power plant.
Yes, it may be based on the Dynaflight Decathlon, that was one of my first thoughts, well what do you know, I always wanted to build one but couldn't make the time for it, I did the math on how much will one spend building the Decathlon and came up about $125.00 short of the Citabria's price, my numbers was for materials only, I didn't include labor and time to build it, so can you pay yourself or someone to build you that airplane for $125.00, no way.
I like to build and have build many airplanes from kits but I'm in the usual situation or passing throug it where I have no time to build from a kit because the usual work and family taking much of my free time so I will have to go with the ARF,
This Citabria was going to be my first gas engine powered airplane but a friend hand me over one of his gas airplane for me to get going with gas engines, now this Citabria will be my second gas airplane.

Yea, I know what you mean. It is for sure fun scale, as there a quite a few things in the scale department that are way off. The biggest thing that got my attention was the weight, and the cubic wing loading. It's going to be a heavy model at only 80" of span. I see now why they put flaps on it, although the full scale Citabria 7GCBC series had flaps from the factory.

There is only one problem in that plane: old fashion design. I mean the wings are laying on the top of the fuselage; therefore, the plane is completely losing its scale appearance and clear top window.
There are 3 more options for Decathlon/Citabria 25%-28% ARFs: Bill Hempel’s $600, GoldwingRC $399 or RCGuys $499. It’s said that the last one needs to be re-filmed completely due to its Chinacote or another junk film.

Look'ed at the manual, I have the Seagull 120 sz, and it's simular in a lot of way's, but this one has some nice refinements to accept gas power. The Seagull has a nasty tip stall if flown too slow, the flaps on this one should help to hold her up in slow speed flight. Agree with eclipse concerning the top wing mount.

I also agree on the wing mount!!! This is going to be a winter build, so I will take my time on her. As for the top window, you will have to build a center section and use the window as a hatch so you can join the wings, hook up the flaps and aileron to the receiver. I may look at that route over the winter. Looking at the video, it will be a sweet flyer and will turn heads at the field next year. She also may look good on floats!!!!

Yes SkyPilot101, you right. Our Vietnamese friends force us to buy extra parts if we use MAX deflections on elevator and rudder. I have a Seagull Decathlon 120 – beautiful flyer if I use low (by manual) deflections on rudder and elevator. If I switch to max (as far as I remember 35mm on elevator) – stall guarantee. The same things happens with ruder. However, unfortunately Seagull 120 has not in the production.

Maybe this is a good thing!!! I found that the first round of a new ARF has tons of problem. I hope Great Planes is getting ahead of the game with this delay!!!
