Great Planes new Escapade for DLE 30cc?

Hey Joe M.
Joe the rudder is on a pull-pull system, so you may want to play with the control horn to see if you can get more throw. On my maiden flight, I did test out the rudder and found out it will do good rudder turns. On landing I had a 45 degs crosswind and the rudder did a great job holding the nose down the runway. As for the use of flaps, I will leave that up to you. This plane slow down real good without them. My covering was tight out of the box, but, after a very short in the sun at my club field, the covering was loose. I hope tomorrow we do not get any rain, ( here in the great northwest ), so I can start playing with props to find a good match-up for engine and power!!
If you need any help or info on this bird, please let us know.

I really can't get any more throw without some modifications. It's not really the control horns or a pull-pull system where the problem is.
When I took the pre-hinged vertical stab/rudder assembly from the box, I noticed I could only get about 2 inches of throw per side.
The problem is, it's the fact that the beveled edge strikes the flat edge to soon, meaning I can't get any extra throw without first cutting the pin hinges, removing the covering at the beveled edge, increasing the bevel angle by sanding it down, recovering the beveled edge and then installing a new set of pin hinges.
It's not a showstopper, just some extra work. I usually allow the rudder edge to come very close to contacting each of the elevators at full throw. In fact, it's usually the elevators that limit me to maximum rudder throws.
On my Great Planes 85" Reactor I have about 6-7 inches of throw per side. With its big a** rudder, it makes for some really crisp and tight stall turns. Seven inches of throw ? Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout !!

Here is that picture of the bottom of the cowl. I was just holding the camera under it and could not see that it didn't focus correctly so it is a bit blurry. I put a small hole in the side for a screwdriver to go in through to adjust the needles without removing the cowl.

Yes it is. It doesn't look bad at all, with gas I would prefer more exit area cut out but there is no room. A notched forward fuselage and firewall would help a lot with cooling but this should be fine.

I hope I am not opening a can of worms with this question but just wondering if the DLE30 or DLE 35 "overall" works best with this plane? I just bought one and got to have the engine. It looks like the DLE35 is a neater fit with the rear exhaust.

That is why I went with the DLE35. The cowl is fairly narrow so there is not very much room for a wrap around pitts muffler. You would have to cut out the side of the cowl somewhat as was found with the OS. The 35 has more power than the 30 so for me is was an easy choice to go with the 35RE.

Only the guys currently using the 35RA can answer your question. From what I'm reading at this thread I'll probably also be using the 35RA.

When I bought my DLE 30 I also added a Pitts style muffler - cost about the same as the 35! DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 20-20 hindsight I would have bought the 35 and just might have to order one as many planes do not have a large enough cowl to hide the side exhaust of the 30.

Joemamma,
I just bought the plane and have got to buy an engine. Sorry about not being clear. Just looking at pictures it looks like the 35RA is a neater cowl setup. I have a couple DLE30s but they are still in use so I have got to buy an engine.
Thanks

The plane that great planes has in there promo material has a dle 30. Asyou can see it is not as a clean a setup as the 35ra, but it still isn't bad. I think if I had already had a 30 I would have just gone with it.

The picture that was on Great Plane wesite with the DLE 30 and the way they had to cut the cowling to make everything fit, I made my mind up quick, fast and in a hurry to go with the DLE 35RA. My cowling is cut the same way Super08 did to his cowl. Had her out today and it was a blast!! Only had one dead stick landing. The reason, I was have so much fun, I just ran out of gas!!! I hate when that happen!!! lol

I already had a 35ra so that's what I went with. I did however toss around the idea of getting an os 33gt cause I really like os stuff. Here is the bottom of mine.
I wanted to fly today but im sick and the wife wont let me leave the house and make the rest of the world sick. So I just sit here waiting to read about how much of a good time everybody had today flying there escapades. LoL/

Ok, you guys talked me into it. A DLE 35RA it will be !
Our club has a 96 db noise rule, so a decent aftermarket muffler will also be needed. From personal experience and from what I have read over the years the supplied DLE mufflers leave a lot to be desired. Plus, they are not a true muffler, just an exhaust diverter.
Too bad there isn’t any room in this plane for a quiet canister.
JTEC has what they call “Snufflers”. These are permanently installed to the down tubes by JTEC when you order one of their mufflers. I could not find a muffler for a 35RA at the JTEC website, so I just shot off emails to JTEC and Bisson about my noise issue.
The picture is of a muffler silencer. During the winter I placed a set of these into the two down pipes on the Bisson muffler for the DLE 55 in my 85" Reactor. I still haven't tried them out yet this spring.

Have one of these on backorder. Site says not due in till July so plenty of time. Have a club special pricing of $289 but the club discount gives you another $45 off plus free shipping. Will be putting a AGM 30cc in for power so should make a good affordable daily flyer. Manual is up on Tower's site so from that it looks like a simple build.

Took mine out today. had a lot of fun with it until the last flight. I was coming in to land with the flaps down, was floating along to high, started to run out of runway so decided to go around, I throttled up and she quit. I went past the end of the runway and started a shallow left turn then set it down, I didn't think I sat it down that hard but it tore out the main gear anyways. It also made a small puncture on the bottom of the wing and right side of the fuse. Damage is no big deal really, I am a long time kit builder and have repaired way way way worse then this. I thought I was over this stalling problem cause I have not had a problem over the last half dozen flights or so. Its been running great. After alittle investigation I realized I had an empty tank. I guess I need to make an adjustment to my timer.

That sucks, at least it ripped out nice and clean. Should make for a very easy repair. I added a bunch of epoxy and milled fiberglass around my mount. If it does rip out it is going to take a bunch of wood with it.
