Default P51

It's built pretty light but that'll make it a good flier. I cut my retract links off with a cutoff disc on a dremmel tool. Using the flexible extension I cut them off after they were attached to the servo.

Default Wire Cutter!

I used a wire cutter - about 30 years old, cut it like soft butter! But the working space was limited!

Jerry

PS Don't think I'll test fly it this weekend - NO SPINNER - oredered one from CB Assoc. and it hasn't arrived...bummer huh?

Default P-51

Well I finally got my retracts working last night and it looks great. I used a JR 9021 servo as the retract servo had to much movement in it and the fit is so tight you can not make any bends in the wire to correct it. I had no problems with the 9021 and tested it for a couple of hours. I slowed the servo down to 2 seconds travel time to make it look more scale. I think it worked really well as 1 wheel comes up a little faster than the other. As for moving the tail wheel forward I did find a way to do it but because I have the tail uncovered it will be easy. If you leave the tail covered then it will be a little more difficult. I am building a plate that will screw in that has the tail wheel connected to it. This will be a pull pull system as will be the rudder. I will try to get some pics posted as soon as possible. It was to late last night so I will try tonight. I am going to use something along the lines of 1/64 ply for fake tailwheel doors and they will be connected to the block so if anthing happens to it I should be able to just make a new tail wheel plate and go with out having to do any damage to the plane. As for drop tanks. I talked to Greg at IMP and he said he had some that might work. They are 7" long and cost is $22. I am not sure if this is for two tanks or just one. You will also have to make your own release or jerry rig one. I hope everyone is enjoying their mustang as much as I am. This is one fine bird built VERY well and should fly very light. Even with the mods I am doing it should only weigh about 8lbs with a YS 91.

Default P-51 with the Saito .72

What do you guys think the Hanger 9 P-51 will fly like using a Saito .72, do you think it would be enough engine??
I read the earlier post that the Saito 1.00 is a bit too much.

i believe u can most definetley under power a plane. ive done it. and wont do it again. they say u can use a 72 and as good as they run ill bet it would fly it. but the saito 100 will most definetley fly it. u can always use the throttle thumb to control speed. u dont have to fly it wide open all the time. but its nice to have that power when u need it. mine is getting the 100. no more chancing smaller engines. my h9 sport cap flys great with a ys 63. my aresti with a 72 and my pizazz flys great with a 72. plenty of power. but i think this plane will way more than 5.5 pounds. so for what its worth id go the 100. cya bill

i love my sport cap. ys 63. i love it. it is nothing but fun. it flys super well. it looks good. unlike what others say. all the gys at the field love it. it will knife edge all day. u can fly this plane all over the field in a knife edge. it snaps like lightning. i have not had one problem with it. and it lands great. this is a great plane. no matter what anyone says.

Default H9 P51 CG?

The book says the CG is 4.75 back from the LE.
Exactly WHERE does one measure THIS on a
tapered wing!
Let me know - I think I am nose heaveeeey.

next to the fuse. it should tell u to measure it as close to the fuse as possible. thats where all my planes have been balanced. so if ur using ur fingers or a cg machine of some sort. let it rest on the wings right next to the fuse bill

Default hanger9 60 size p51

My wife got me one for my birthday. Does anyone know where I can get different decals made for it? I want to name it for my wife whose name is not Marie. I bought a Saito .91 Golden Knight for it. I figured since the engine sticking out wouldn't be scale that at least those two golden valve covers sticking out would make it look that much better. I thought about a Saito 100, but too many people around here have had problems with vibration breaking mounts and muffler pipes and valve keepers falling off. I have one on a 4 Star 60 and have not had any problems. But those gold valve covers just got to me. I also had to order a spinner. Something about everyone being out of stock due to this plane.

Thanks,
Tim

We have a local franchise called Signmasters - they can make most anything in vinyl. ( I am copying the decal sheet in vinyl) Look in the phone book under signs and you will find a shop that can make you a new name.

Ok I am going to try to post some pics. I added a Top Flight display prop to make it look a little better when I am not flying it. I also got the tail wheel on and working (thanks to Dave at my LHS).

rcavi8ter Beautiful job!! I have a couple of quick silly questions. First my kit came with two pieces of heat shrink tubing but I can't find any place in the instructions where this is called for. Also do you use the 1 1/4 bolts on the firewall and the 1 " on the engine mounts. The manual didn't say.

I flew mine today. I have a Magnum .91 on the nose. I had a blast. It was blowing about 20 mph out. I have been waiting to fly this bad boy for a while. I finally said what the hell. Everything went great. The retracts are strong. The only problem is taxiing on grass. It want to nose over. The .91 is very scale, and performs well. I can't wait to fly again. Check out the first landing on my website. Good luck with yours.

flew my 51 tonight for the first time. it flew really well. just got done raining. it wanted to tip over once in a while in the wet grass. my saito 100 on 15 cool power really ran well. plenty of power. she took right off. it took a little down trim for level flight. noticed it is very sensitive to elevator input. i started at 50% expo. im going to try about 90 for up elevator and 80 for down. and im going to use the 1 1/16 travel as high rate. and im going to cut it down a little for low rate. cant believe how slow it will fly and land. i did not expect it to be so sensitive to the elevator input. so ill tame it donw a little. it flew really well. this is going to be a nice plane. and im going to switch to 30 heli fuel like i run all my other saitos on. a little more money. but they all run so well on it. i dont care. its just u have to watch the tipping over on its nose. but the ground was so soft. maybe when dry it will be better. but this is a really nice plane. best birthday present i ever got.

Default Flew my 51 all day yesterday!

Hanger Nine - Are you listening?
This little .60 size P51D is one SWEET airplane!!!
I 'break-in' my Saito's with 30% heli-fuel and the
FA-100 spools up the 14x8 like finesville man! '40 minutes .'
Plenty of power! As a matter of fact, I rolled into
the north wind, applyed 1/2 stick, and the tail was
immediately UP...Rolled out 15 feet and she jumped into
the wind blue! Put her to the firewall, and went
completely vertical! All I can say was WOW! I split
S'd and came down at idle for a pass and hit the
gear switch, up they go, more power, 45º climb out
right above the runway! This is FUN.
Stable at high speed and dives are just like the war...
OK, what'll she do on approach? Left stick back, make the
base turn, a little high just in case she drops like a rock,
no flaps, (Idle is still a bit high to avoid you know what)
and she is running so SLOW and so STABLE right over
the asphalt, my eyeballs are popping from their sockets!
I hit idle-down, engine stopped and she sets right down
on the mains! Too cool for words!
Our LHS is selling them at $216.95 and this investment
is in the 'definately-worth-it' catagory! Gottagetone!
Thanks Hanger Nine! Now-how about a .60 Corsair?

Try ordering the gun detail parts from Top Flite for their Gold Edition Mustang. I've got the GS Top Flite Mustang gun parts for my GS World Mustang, they fit just fine.

Default Good idea!

Just migth have to do that! Thanks for the lead...

Test flew it today - 20+ mph winds, took off at less than 1/2 throttle! Flew great - and the CG was 4.25" back instead of the 4.75 recommended.

Going to move the battery back even further! Flys great with retracts up, really smooth....
