I've been checking out Tower's ad for the upcoming GP Super Stearman:

I'm thinking this might be a good candidate for a B&B G26 that I now have sitting on my bench. Plane looks great and I can't wait to get more info on it. I'm a sucker for biplanes!

Note that this past weekend Tower lowered the price $20. I'm not sure if they will adjust previous orders. I cancelled my order then re-ordered at the lower price ($20 is $20, another gallon of 30%),

Thanks for the heads up Jim, I just did the same. Then got an e-mail stating cost changes were retroactive on all products and I did not have to cancel and re-order to get the better price and doing so would jeopardize your place in line for a new product upon arrival.
But still thanks for the info. Better safe than sorry.

I myself am wanting one of these. I would recon that a Zenoah G26 would work ok would it not? I havent had a gasser before, what all do you have to do different other than different fuel lines?

I posted some pictures of the G26 along side the Stearman cowl in another thread that should be close by. You won't be able to use the stock mounts or the stock firewall setup. You'll need to change the fuel system over to be gasoline-friendly as in the prior post, and you'll want to use a non-metallic pushrod for the throttle cable rather than the metal pushrod that comes with the kit. Other than that, it is ready to go. Unfortunately, the beautiful spinner they enclosed will fit the shaft of the G26, but the prop holes are for a smaller engine, so to use the bigger props the G26 can swing will require either modification, or you can do as I am and get the Tru Turn 2-3/4 AT6 spinner with the 120-sized slots which works great. This spinner is readily available as it was designed for the Midwest AT6 and actually is a better looking size on the Stearman than the stock spinner.

looks like it will be a very nice bipe, and if the quality is as good as with their other bipes and recent products they offer like the Christen Eagle or Patty Wagstaff they have a winner. Just by looking at it on the tower site I would say it screems for the nice sound of a twin four stroke.

I too am going to order one of these & hope the people responding to & reading this forum will input thier thoughts as to any aspects of this planes construction, flying , & design integrity.
Usually the gear is a weakness on these types of ARF's, especially when going to a heavier engine so hope to hear from you guys .

DID YOU GET THE INTERFERENCE PROBLEMS CLEARED UP.I WENT TO THE FEILD TO FLY MINE AND WHILE DOING THE GROUND CHECKS THE INTERFERENCE WAS TOO MUCH WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING TO FLY.I HAVE AN OLD G23 ON MINE AND CAN'T WAIT TO FLY IT BUT MUST GET THE INTERFERENCE CLEARED UP BEFORE I FEEL SAVE FLYING IT.IT BALANCED GOOD AND THROWES ARE SET.
READY FOR TAKEOFF.

NO not yet. If I dont soon I will be bald. We had a fun fly here this weekend and ALL of the guys flying gassers that I spoke with and we had over 100 or so total (not all gassers) told me that they just use fm receivers. And one uses nothing but GMS fm 8 channels. Soooo, I bought one and installed it and really didnt see any difference. But.....I am going to do some more rearangements tomorrow Lord willing and try again. I get about 90 ft and from what my JR 8103 manual says that is way over the recomended test range. So If I get this to work I will probly go and fly it. I am going to try a Expert 6v 2700mah 5 cell too. I have the receiver and battery behind the servos and will most likely need a nose ballace but oh well. What kind of stuff are you using stearman08?

Maiden my Sterman yesterday and running a OS 160 twin flat 4 stroke. All i can say is this plane is awesome. Had a good cross wind to contend with and it doesnt like the cross wind condition. The wind did straigten out to straight South at 5 mph and what a difference The 160 twin is not over power but i am running a 16/6 Master airscrew prop and probally could get better vertical out of a more efficient prop like a APC 16/8 . The plane required some right rudder imput on take off and flys very scale at 1/2 throttle. Put about 12 flights on it and one gallon fuel thru it. Motor is new. Using Wildcat sport prem fuel at 15 %nitro. Never had readust the needles out of the box. Landings are faily easy but i found with a stiff straight on breeze it required a bout 1/8 throttle then right before touchdown i let off throttle and it settled right in I am using the dubro inflatible tires with no air in them. Otherwise it will bounch a bunch. All and al i am a very pleased . I looks very good in the air. and the twin sounds awesome .

Another Stearman report, I had my fourth, fifth and sixth flight yesterday, April 19, 2005 and this plane is awsome. It is powered by a Zenoah G-23 and a APC 16X8 prop. I added the flying wires, and painted the dummy engine black silver and added red wire for the plugs. The plane needed no added weight to balance. Comments were very good at the field, and everyone that got a chance at the sticks loved it. Our club ACE put it through some manuvers, and all he could reccomend was a little more throw in the rudder. Rongreg13 had photos in another thread that was a great help in getting my first gasser installed. Thanks Ron.

I have about 25 flight on my Super Stearman. I have a FPE 2.4 40cc engine gasser in it. The fiit is perfect. First flight needed 2 clics of down trim and that is it. She climbs like crazy does the IMAC sportsman pattern very well. The landings are incredible. very slow and beautiful to watch.

I have about 12 flights on my Stearman with a G-26 and the stock muffler. This was my first gas project and I must say I am hooked!
I installed a sullivan skywriter and 8oz smoke tank right on the CG and the plane flys very, well.

I used a lot of the servos and equipment from a PAC Gee Bee that never got into the air, as you can see...lol

The plane went together very well and I do lost of the flying at about 1/3 throttle. As others have said, the G-26 with APC 18x6W prop will hover the plane for about 12 seconds.

I must say that I would advise anyone who buys this plane to get low bounce wheels. As the video shows I tried to set up for a nice soft landing and was pleased at the landing. However the day before I flew with the stock tires and that same style landing resulted in a huge bounce.


All in all it is one of my favorite planes, both on the flight line and in the air.

My stearman is fitted with a MVVS 1.6 with a 18x6 carbon prop and this combo flights great.
This morning however I was lucky not to lose the plane, basically everytime i tried to take off as soon as i aproached take off speed she would skew violently to the left, eventually i managed to yark her off the ground but she continued pulling to the left i trimmed her out and continued without a second thought.

Next flight she did the same thing ( so it wasn't the rudder as i originally thought) and this time broke the control horn on the rudder, ah so that was it a cracked control horn.

Well no not quite, when stripping her down i found that one of the screws holding the cabanes to the body had completely worked loose hence when the top wing lifted (at takeoff speed) the whole thing would twist, I think i was lucky not to lose he plane.

found a sort of cure for the splitting of the undercarriage, i have applied heatshrink this keeps it together and has enough give so as not to crack again.

I have a G26 with stock muffler using a 18x6 prop on it and have about 12 flights. The plane flies beautifully and required only 2 clicks of down trim on its first flight. I built the plane with four aileron servos, flying wires and dummy engine with plug wires and all. The plane really is pretty and a joy to fly. It balanced perfectly with the G26 installation. I'd be interested in hearing about the props others are using with this plane, particularly with the G26. Thanks.

I know this is an old thread, but I've just started - or rather, I should say RESUMED - my build on my Super Searman ARF, and this is going to be a beauty. I'll be outfitting her with a Syssa SAP 180 (30CC) gasser, which weighs just about exactly the same as the recommended glow engine and the 18 ounces of added weight.

I had just started on it when my book went to publishing, and I had to put it on the shelf. I've been crazy busy ever since. Things have finally slowed down and I'm going to enjoy some downtime and put this lovely Bipe together.

One thing I'll be doing differently is I'll be putting a dual elevator linkage in the back, which will run from a single servo, which I bought from - well, I can't remember their name. Shows how long since I put the project down. I'll get that name. I plan to use good linkages, which means I'll be doing a little changing inside the tail section.

Thinking that pull-pull on the rudder would be nice too, since I've already opened the belly.

If anybosy wants to start any dialogue about the GP Super Stearman 1.20 ARF, I'm all ears.
