One of the first things I'm going to do is shoot two coats of clear polyurethane on the fabric, LG and cowl in order to seal the weave. Won't be able to keep it clean otherwise. Once oil and dirt get into the weave, there's no getting them out. I have an Ace 4-120 Bipe that I covered with SolarTex (WorldTex by another name) many years ago. I shot clear poly-U on it after I put on all the decals and lettering. After 10 years it still looks good and cleans up easily.
Anyone know of a non-yellowing clear poly-U that's readily available? Wal Mart doesn't have the stuff I used to use any more.

I found out about it in the "For sale" forum and called Chief real guick.
Got mine for $279.95 early last month.
It's awaiting it's turn, you all know what I mean.
B.T.W., will a Moki 210 fit?

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
I have never had to seal a covering before.
I am planning to go to the LHS at buy two cans of either Top Flite or Ultra coat Clear. Should it be flat or glossy and would this work ?? I will be using a glow engine. Any other recomendations ??
Thanks,
Gary

I have always gone to Wal Mart, or another place that handles lots of paint in spray cans, bought a couple of cans of some brand of clear poly-U and gone to spraying.
All brands of clear poly-U turn yellow over time, in my experience. Some yellow more than others. On a white finish you want the one that folks have found to yellow the least. That's why I asked. Don't buy the stuff at the hobby shop. You'll pay more to get the HS supplier's label for paint that can be had from your discount store, very often.

mustang105, That's the original cowl modified. Made the scoop with 1/8" lite ply "I cant remember if it was lite" ZDZ 40 rvl powerplant concealed nicely. Big power for aerotowing sailpanes 1/4 scale and smaller aloft.

What servos did you use in the Cub with the ZDZ-40? I'm going to use a G-38 and am wondering if I need high torque servos in some positions.
TIA,

Thanks, Gunny. I'll prolly use high torque on the rudder and elevator med on the rest , std on the throttle. Flight pack are getting expensive!

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
I am trying to decide what engine will work out the best. I have a ST 2300 in the box but I am thinking of getting a Saito 100 for the Super Cub. I know it's the lowest size engine but it would also be the lightest. Any opinions on this engined being to small for scale type flying ?
Also, Thanks Charley for the information on sealing the covering.

Got mine delivered Tuesday - Chief did a great job, all of the voids in the box were filled with peanuts to ensure no damage. Wanted to use my saito 1.82 in this but cowl would take a lot of triming and kill the look - or maybe the cylinders hanging out would look ok - nice kit though.

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
Hey Scott (and others) no this airplane is not a mistake, and you can get plenty of reassurance from me... Here's mine. The short version of the story is I've been working on a Flair quarter scale Tiger Moth for a while, and decided with all the work, I really didn't want the flight pack, engine, etc. all working for the first time on my new Moth. So, I picked up one of the Super Cubs at Chief, and put in every component planned for the Moth. It has a Laser 1.50 4-stroke, glow driver, gyro on rudder, and all digital servos on a 5-cell pack. I also added the Dubro Cub gear (very nice!), Jerry Cotter 1/4 Scale Tailwheel, and Hangar 9 instrument panel. I did quite a bit of detail work cleaning up the covering, finishing the interior, and adding flying wires to the tail. The only mod I had to make was to relocate the tank tray due to the carb location on the Laser. All-in-all, though, probably one of the nicest looking ARF's I've had. All up weight is 14.9 pounds, and it really is an outstanding flier. The Laser is a perfect match, if not slightly overpowered. Presence in the air is very nice at low throttle. Slow approaches and touchdowns with the flaps out are a thing of beauty. My only caution is to make the sure the CG is back where it belongs, and fly the elevator all the way through the roll-out on landing. It will nose over during roll-out if you're not careful (ask me how I know). I fly off grass, so this does contribute.

EdwardB,
WOW! Nice Job!! It is beautiful!
When you say that you worked on the covering, what did you mean...the clear coat that I've read in earlier posts? Are the tail wires working or detail for appearance only?
Thanks again for taking the time to post...this is what I love about this hobby...lots of support and people willing to help out. Thanks again!

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
Yes, the way I did the tail wires, they add strength. They're normal 2-56 size pushrods, with a threaded clevis on one end, and soldered on the other. I just cut one leg off the clevis (the one with the pin) and drill out the other for a 2-56 bolt. Pretty normal process. I can post a picture if this doesn't make sense. I don't think the model needs the extra strength, but I needed a little tail weight to balance, so made it something useful and tried to place them near the scale positions. No, I haven't clear coated the fabric. I've read all the posts, but I haven't had any problem. It occasionally can get a little dirty or whatever, but I haven't any trouble with it cleaning up OK. I did polish the whole plane with Monokote polish. Maybe this is sealing a little. The reference in my post was just to shrinking up the few little sags, trimming the edges a little better in places, and putting heat on the seams to make sure everything was nice and tight. The covering job out of the box was pretty nice though.

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
Yes an old post but... Maybe a few still read/follow
I have aquired one of these cubs. It has only been flown once, all together with G26 and a really good price (Basically still new). Anyway the covering it a bit dirty and I was wondering if someone can provide advice on the best thing to use to clean it up. If it cleans up nice, it sounds like it should be clear coated.
Any comments any cleaning and also clear coat types? Painting tips in case it does not clean up?
Also... Are the discontinued kits available anywhere?
Thanks

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
Use 3M general purpose adhesive cleaner Part no. 051135-08984. It works great on the white fabric. It will run the color on the red so be real careful there. The white comes out like band new. Doc

RE: H9 Super Cub Discontinued!
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get a pair of skis for my H9 Super Cub? Are some better than others? How do I determine how long or wide the skis need to be? Summer is pretty much over here in the Northeast and before I know it, that white crap will be on the ground again. Thanks in advance. [email protected]
