You'll love the way the 160 runs. Best of luck with the cowl. Any photos of what you have so far?

It hasn't ran up to my expectations so far....What I mean by this,
is that It is having wayy to much varience when having plane nose hight while on idle.

Also it is loading up too much for my taste after comming off idle....
That it will hesitate while doing a quick blast of the throttle...

Lean out the bottom, too lean and quits when nose high....

I am not going to place this plane at risk and behind the 8-Ball....(not going down that road again)

I have recieved the New updated carb today....

I will take some BEFORE and AFTER video of how it ran and runs currently....

Hopefully the new carb will be a perfect solution, and no more issues....

Again, it runs really well when Just sitting.... but with different attitude changes, It deosn't run well enough..
nothing really helps...(Muffler preasure, perry pump ect) \
Higher Nitro content seems to help,. but I do not want to have to run much at all....

So hopefully this is a great solution....

The engine runs great on 10% nitro. I heat cycled my engine thru at least a half gallon of fuel before I flew it and I think I started with a APC 17X6w prop which is what I fly with. I have never had a dead stick or a cylinder drop out. If you check the tach forum you can see what I was getting for rpm on Byron 10% fuel. My engine has the new carb.

Set the carb with 1/2 tank of fuel, the high end 300 rpm down from peak, the low end for good excelleration, and your idle trim for a 2000-2200 or so idle even if the engine will idle slower. After the engine has two gallons thru it you can lower the idle to 1800 rpm if you want. All those parts need to break in and get used to one another but don't rush it. You don't want them to wear out, you want them to fit together better, there is a difference. Make sure you are running some % of castor in your fuel or you will ruin the engine.

Put the servos in the plane and finish it up. Life is short, fly it.

Ran the engine today.....Wow.... what a difference a carb can make....

No more loading up, or irregular fuel delivery when nose high/low ect while idleing or WOT!....

IF you have the OS 1.60 Twin with the Airbleed carb, and it isn't running to you specs....
Give the updated 2-carb a try...What great choice to make ......

Very pleased...

The plane has all the electronics in it....
I have been waiting to paint the cowl up....(haven't been over to the PAINT shop yet...)

Just need to glue the guy and the cockpit it. and mount the canopy....

It is suppost to snow, so I am looking forward to trying to get this flying before it does@>..

It also is Tail heavy, so I will need to shift some of the IGnition and batteries UP FRONT>>>>

I have a FF-240 on my RC Guys decathlon and it is a single carb multi cylinder engine and works great. My setup includes a Mcdaniels 4 plug glow driver for low RPM / idle but more importantly I installed the cline regulator system to maintain consistant fuel pressure to the carb. With the bottom mounted carb it is tough to maintain the fuel tank level with the needle valve, this solved the problem.

do you have the airbleed carb?
Could you post a picture of your setup with the Cline regulator??
Did you place a tee, in the crank preasure taP?

The engine was built back in the 80's, looking at the carb though I have a mixture adjustment on mine.

The tap on the motor is not a pressure tap, it is a crankcase breather and is usually located near the bottom of the crankcase to drain residual oil in the crankcase. I normally route a piece of fuel tubing from this tap to a location that exists the cowl to allow for oil drainage. (In the pic I have I am experimenting with a oil seperator which allows the gas to vent but collect the oil in a small 2oz tank)

Since the cline setup requires a pressurized fuel system I used the exhaust pressure to charge the fuel system like a a normal setup with a 2 stroke engine, although more expensive than flexible tubing I purchased a Keleo custom exhaust for my FF-240 and used the pressure tap off the muffler with a check valve installed to maintain consistant exhaust pressure to the fuel tank.
You can see the cline regulator on the right side, it simply controls fuel feed to the carb. The best part about this setup is you do not have to worry about siphoning as the regulator will not pass fuel as it needs positive pressure in the tank and the motor needs to be running to provide vacuum on the carb side, I use this setup with all my inverted fourstroke setups.

Here is a link to a video with my FF-240 running with the cline setup

Thank you Very much for your detailed install.....
GREAT IDEA,,,,,

I have tried a simular approach, but didn't fair well because I had to have a T-off the CRANK vent (like yours)
so the preasure was minial at best to operate the regulator....
Only difference was that I had a Cline pump...Which other guys have had luck using on a 4-stroke...

I have to share something as well....

In testing the new 2-needle carb, all of a sudden the engine seemed to run the SAME as the airbleed one???

Well I cycled the ignition battery, and waallaa.... Ran great....

I placed the ORIGINAL airbleed carb on the engine, and Guess what?? RAN PERFECT>....

It appears I didn't account for the C&H ignition being such a battery HOG.....
I have a 3000MA 4-cell NMHI 1/10th truck battery, and it REALLY sucks the juice down quickly...

Not only did it run throught the transition phase (from idle to mid) it also GAINED
some RPM''s......IMAGINE THAT??....

If anyone is looking for a chipmunk - I think I'm going to put mine up for sale. I've had it for around 4 years and still haven't got to it so I might as well let someone who would have a crack at it. I'm asking $350 plus shipping. If you go back in the thread you'll see I've got it setup for a Roto35vi and can include it and the muffler (supersonic) along with the Dubro isolation mounts for another $500. Here's the pic of the motor installation. The only part of the build I've still got done. Everything is still NIB except for the motor mount and cowl cut. Would love to sale as a combo since it's meant to be together!

Cad,

Sorry to hear you never finished it. I see you didn't cut out for the muffler.

I bought my last one from Tower for $319.00 including shipping.

Yeah, I never finished the cowl installation other then for the head. Still will need a hole for the needle adjustments as well. I'm a huge Chipmunk fan but an even bigger Pitts M12 fan and I just purchased a 35%'r that needs all of my available funds so I have to sale off my planes to fund it.

The motor came from rcshowcase which is now handled through tbm and tom is still doing the service on the motors. It's built like a brick outhouse.

When TBM took over RCS - the e-mail said that Tom (I think was the guys name from RCS) would continue to support, repair, fix, support, all of the motors that RCS carried. The roto motors are well known for being smooth running motors. I just loved the way it looked on the plane with the 4 bolt main hub.

slight mishapp with the chippy..
Aileron servos reversed....
I even looked at it and checked it out...

I guess only getting 4-hours of sleep the night prior (working on it)
didn't help..l.

Lesson learned...

Minor damage...
VERY happy I had a New Canopy on hand!...

I may make a mold of the new, unmounted one.

THis way I can take and have a Fiberlass canopy and use some thin plastic to fill in the spaces...
Or just have a painted fingerglass canopy...
Either way...Better than a busted up one!!

Tower has spare parts for the chippy instock. I just sold mine with out the roto so we will never know how the plane was finished with the roto. They also have new cowls, etc... instock.

I would still like to see them come out with a Harold Krier version that used a Beechcraft cowl. The plane was very good looking and the FIRST Super Chipmunk.

Flew my venerable squirrel today....
fly's similar to a mustang or Cap. as it can start to snap out of loops if too much elevator applied.
The foam wheels have to go, and the landing gear is quite soft....
Causes the gear to go forward and the wheel plants (rear) to grind along the pavement
when landing...

Other than my os 1.60 twin having the siphoning, everything went great...
Nice plane...

Lower your tank, you'll have a better idle and if your carb barrel closes fully, no siphoning.

Got a photo of your cowl?

Consider installing a Cline regulator system, I use them for all my inverted installations as well as for my OS FF-240/FT-300 installs as it is near impossible to maintain the tank line close to the needle valve. Its works great and you will have no siphoning.
