Default Hqanger 9 120 Ultra Stick

I need some feedback guys. I am flying the 120 U Stick with a Zenoa 23. The 23 has about as much pep as a wet noodle. I have a Z 38 doing nothing. Has anybody flown this combination?Do you think it would be too much power?

I seen one last year with a G-45 on it...Very impressive until the right aileron let go and started flopping around...got it down safely too...took 6 oz. of lead in the tail to balance...

Have three of them at my field , not on a G38 but for gas powered comparisons:

Brison 2.4 goes out of site straight up if you want it to. Friend flew it first time yesterday, first choice, should hover easily.

RCS 1.8 , high enough for a neck ache. Not sure about 3D as he does not fly that much.

I fly mine on a G23 and have had RCS 1.4 on it also. The RCS is lighter by a pound or so compared to My 13 Ib. G23 version. I have limited verticle but it does big loops and if you are good it will do one torque roll, I get about 3/4 the way around and lose it.
My G23 is just now starting to wind up after the third season. Gets 9000 or better with a MA Classsic 16 x 8 depending on the temperature. Is the engine still breaking in?
I don't think the G38 is going to make a dramatic improvement as
it is going be near 14 lbs. or so and the Brison etc. are more powerful and lighter engines to boot.

cw46, Yes the 23 is new. Tried master airscrew 16x8 and 16x6. I can.t get a decent idle from either one and the 6 should give more pull than the 16x8 but I see no difference between them. Maybe a wooden prop might help. I didn't have a tach at the field so I don't know what I am getting. I also think I made a mistake with the fuel and put in more oil than I should because it is throwing out a very oily black exhaust. Otherwise it's a fun airplane. The first time I tried crow on landing the airplane shot up about ten feet.

By the time you add weight to the back of the airplane to offset the weight of the G-38 you will have lost the benefit of the extra power. Another problem is that these size gas engines really shine with large props and the US 120 stock landing gear will limit you to a 16" prop on grass.

Other's have alluded to other gas engines that are better because they put out more power and weigh much less than the Zenoah's and US'. Unfortunately they cost much more.

Your best alternative is a large 2-stroke for this airplane. IMHO the optimum combination is with an OS FX 1.60. This will give you unlimited vertical with this airplane. If your good with finicky engines you might try the MDS 148 or Magnum 180. MDS even has a 2.1.

Hanger Rat,

The Master Airscrew is the Classic version, rounded tips and wider chord? We have found these to work quite well, same performance as an APC 16x8 at half the price. You should see 8000+ static rpm with these on new engine. Sounds like it might need a little more run in time or needle adjustment, I have good low end idle on two of them.
The oily black residue is normal, as time goes on it will lessen. A friend kept track of time on his G23 and he had near a hundred hours according to his radio timer before the residue finally went away. BTW I use Amzoil 50:1

I saw a US 120 fly at a field with a ZDZ 40 and the performance was awsome. It had unlimited vertical and it would still alnd slower than a trainer. I was more impressed with it then the 40% caps flying around!

I had a Brison 2.4 on mine and replaced it with a used Quadra 35 that I gave 150.00 for and it is a blast. It is a little weaker in the vertical but not by much.Brison 500 Quadra 150.I use a zinger 18-8 and have no problems with prop strikes with the stock gear.

I am flying the US120 with the G23 also. The G23 flys the A/C okay but it has no pizzaz. I have a Taurus 2.6 that I would like to try. This engine has the slimline muffler and would have to use standoffs for it to clear. This means the engine really moves forward and could cause a problem with the CG. Ground clearance could also be a problem. The big question is would it be worth the time and effort to change out the engine?

I have one for sale NIB for $200 shipped if anyone is interested. It is the all white version. Horizon no longer sells these---they have been pulled from their web site so you better get one soon if you want one. E-mail me: [email protected]

Thanks, Kevin

Hey Radar

No need for stand offs, I just shorten the fuselage by an inch and cut and boxed the front of the fuselage so the muffler had the room needed. You will love that Taurus 2.6! That would be an awesome set up! Hope you can see what I'm saying with this picture. Look right behind the muffler and you can see how I cut the fuselage.

Doug

Please explain how you can get an 18-8 on this bird without either bending the landing gear inward grossly or putting Piper Cub type wheels (5 or 6") on it and making it look like a duck. I've own 4 of these and the only way I could use the an 18" prop was when I switched to the TnT tall landing gear.

Hillija I bolted the prop on the engine and guess what? IT does not hit the ground. I have the stock wheels .I use Zinger and APC 18-8 props. No problem.I did not bend landing gear.I don't understand YOUR problem. I can't understand anybody owning 4 of these planes though.

I wrote the original message asking for feedback on putting a Zenoah 38 in place of a 23 that didn't seem to have any pep.
I have since replaced the original carburater with one from a Homelite 25 and replaced the muffler with a C & B header. The engine now seems to have a lot more power. My only problem now is to figure out how to configure crow to operate independant of the throttle. I set it up with my 8 uap using the glider menu. Crow only works at the moment at low throttle and I want it to work at all throttle settings. Can anyone write the whole sequence of programing crow with the acro menu?
Thanks for all your feedback you guys, I learned a lot.
