depending on the battery...
I got 1200 watts from 24 old NiCd 2400 using 18*8 prop, no clearance problem.
Should be able to get 2500 watts with appropriate LiPo battery (95 amps) and 23*13 prop.
Some people use this motor in F3A.
Photos follow.

You could be the first to be able to hover a giant scale Stearman. [8D]

I'm thinking that if you set that thing up for anything much over 1500 watts out, you may well rip the wings off it! That's a LOT of power. [X(]

I am shooting for a scale level of power myself. If I wanted a large scale Ultimate bipe 3Der, that's about the power level I'd be looking for, but this plane begs to be flown on the wing, not the motor--in a scale manner. The good news for your setup is that you'd never have to worry about not having ENOUGH power.

And you can always throttle back.

To be honest, I planned to use a 1500 Watts Pletty 370/40/A3, but I was unable to fit it in place.
I got the opportunity to buy this Cyclon 160 for a good price, and it is lighter than the Pletty.
Running it under 24 NiMh 3300 would be enough, I think.
More, to get motor cool, I will replace the radial motor with a cowl like the super stearman and build a box for the battery, accessible from the front pilot place, so that I get an appropriate air flow.

The Cyclon 160 at full power should be equivalent to be equivalent to a glow 160, may be it is not stupid to get full power.
LiPo are very expensive, I need 10C with enough P's to get 95A; new Kokam 3200 seems to be able to provide 64A with 128A peaks.
Any comment?

Rowdyl, yep it is a great flying plane no doubt about it! Question for you, what part of Omaha do you live? I spent a lot of time in the Glenwood, IA area on my grandparents farms. Great place to fly, too bad I had yet to get into the hobby back then.

Thanks\

BTW, My pt has the Saito 120 with the 16/6 classic master airscrew and it flies very scale.

Chasrb,

Hmmm, visited Iowa alot. I also used to live on the north side of Omaha! Small world.

I finally got the 260 done and have some time to get to the PT17!!!!!! I got the wings glued together last night, and recovered the tail surfaces the day before. If anyone is wondering, the manual is wrong, the plane does not have true red monokot...at least mine didn't. I ended up using the missile red on the tails.

Anyway, I was wondering where you mounted your servos and such for balance with your engine, did you mount them all the way forward? I am still leaning towards gas, and need to make my decision, so I wanted to see how yours balanced out to get an idea on whether mounting servos towards the rear of the fuse opening would get me close with a ROTO or MVVS.

Hey bud! You been outa da country? Are you going to the PWCRC meeting tonight? I actually mounted all the servos right where the manual called them out. The only weight I put in the box was my ram 50 glow.

Glad the 260's done when u flying?

Yeah, been traveling again. In country this time, but the location is like being on the moon. I have a lot of travel this year...still to come. []

I plan on going to the meeting, if the AC repair guy gets my heat exchanger motor fixed in time at the house. I may go to the FARM fun fly Sunday.

I think I may go with your ROTO 25 suggestion. It has the rear carb so there should be less cutting of the cowl than the MVVS/H-9 would, but it is heavier. I will let you know when I make a decision.

Is everyone here using the CA hinges? If so, how are they holding up?

They are working good for me. I check them before I fly, no problems...

My Pt-17 balanced exactly where the manual says it should. Mine was built by the book with the OS 120. I did not use the weight box however one of the guys from the club with a lot of experience who flew it said he thougt it needed to be a little nose heavy. I am going to add 5-6 oz. and see how it flies.

I have a super stearman with a G-26, perfect match. Clean up is very easy, most is under cowl qnd under bottom of wing. If you want a no fuss start up and fly engine this is the one.

have a GP super steerman have mounted a G26 and its balances right on the money NO WIEGHT. Lots of power and very little torque. Fit in the Cowel is perfect and mounting is a wiz. No other choice in my mind and the G26 is coperable if not better than a 120 to 150m 4 stroke in price.

Hi Fred Everything is stock no conversion ( except for the fuel tank fittings ) Stock muffler.
I am getting 84 8500 RPM with a 16 X 8 prop. This will get better with time as the engine breaks in. I have 3 G26 engines and love them all.
The Airplane flys great and has lots of power . I am very pleased with the match of engine to plane.
let me know if you want more pics or info
Be glad to help

Pat

Hi Pat,thanks for the info. How did you center the engine on the firewall.I have been reading that this engine will work very good with a 17/6 or a 18/6.Did have any throble hooking up the throttle linkage.
thanks Fred

What I did was I cut a plate the same size as the mount on the G26 and marked the center of the mount on the plate that I cut . Then I drilled out 4 holes in the exact place that the 4 engine mounting holes were on the firewall acording to the center of the mount. I then counter sunk the 4 holes on the new plate 1/2 the thickness of the cap screws. I clamped the new plate and the one that came with the G26 together and drilled the for outer holes to bolt the engine plate to the new mounting plate. I also marked the location of the for fuse mounting bolts on the G26 plate and counter sunk them the other 1/2 of the cap screw thickness this way the plates would lay flat against each other when bolted to the fuse. i also marked the hole where the crank shaft nut on the G26 mounting plate was and hogged out a little on the fuse plate for clearence ( you could drill right through if you want just the diameter of the crank nut . i cut 3/4 inch long round spacers and placed them in between the new plate and the fuse with the 4 inner mounting bolts running through them .

Hellcat- I've been flying this plane all summer and the set up isn't bad. It takes at most 15 minutes. It could go a lot faster, but when you show up at the field with this plane people come over and start asking questions as you are trying to set up! Some things I did to make this process go faster, I made a little bolt holder out of a thin piece of spongy foam to hold my strut bolts and washers. This keeps bolts and washers together and keeps me from misplacing them. I also keep the outer wing-struts bolted onto the bottom wing, that saves the time of putting in 4 bolts. Have to be careful so as not to knock them off the wings in transportation though. The flying wires, as described in the instructions, work very well and add very little time to the process.

Hi Pat,so you mounted the plate to the firewall with the holes that where in the firewall then mounted the g-26 to that plate. What is the new plate made of.When you mounted the hole thing to the wall you put in 3/4" spacers between the mount and the fire wall.Is that about right? Also you didnt use rubber shock mounts, are you not worried about engine vibs.
thanks Fred

I have read some interesting remarks about engines choices. Any thoughts about the RCS 1.4 gas or Brison 2.4 gas engines. I know the RCS as far as published information goes will swing the same prop, brand(apc) size at the same rpm. The plane seems heavy at 15 pounds for a 1.20 glow. I have a 1/4 scale Cub with a Brison 2.0 and it flies real close to scale speeds. Thanks for comments.
